Will the Nexus S last 2 more years?

Hey guys!

I'm currently in the middle of making the difficult choice of the Evo 3D or the Nexus S 4G.

I like the Nexus' Pure Android/Google experience. And being the first to get updates, being unlocked, tethering, and just the thought of being straight from Google is really cool.

My only problem is, I don't think it can last 2 years. From all the videos I've seen about the 3D and Nexus benchmarking, it seems the Evo is slightly faster. But when it comes to actually opening apps and using the phone, the Nexus just seems better.

I'm thinking about getting the Evo just because of the dual core processor. From what I've read, android doesn't actually use both cores, or at least not very efficiently. Is this true?

If it is, will the next update be any better? And will the 3D even get the update within 6 months of its release?

I'm just concerned about the Nexus being outdated soon after I buy it, just like my current phone, the Pre, was.

I don't care very much about the 3D part, and IMO sense is part of why the 3D doesn't do so much better than the Nexus. Also, not a big problem, but I'm not liking the fact that the 3D's cameras take up half the back of the phone.

Do you all think the Nexus will last longer than the Evo?

(Also, I'm planning on getting one of the phones within the week! :D. I think I also should mention that I have never used android, not even in stores. Unless you count helping my Mom with her "Epic". :P)

Thanks!

In two years the Evo 3D will be obsolete as well as the Nexus S. Two years in cellphone land is an eternity. I stuck with the Nexus because of the updates.

In two years, I think this phone will still be awesome. We will have Gingerbread for the rest of this year. At the beginning of next year we will get Ice cream Sandwich. By the time Google comes out with another OS, you will be due for another phone. Other than the front camera and NFC, Nexus One owners are on par with us and their devices are almost two years old.

Well, for what it's worth, many of us had to make a similar decision. If ice cream sandwich OS comes out by the end of the year (though it may take longer), then it would take a while for HTC to come up with an update - at least six months. So, at best, it would take a year for the dual core to reach some potential (note that even now, the Evo 3d is running an older OS than the Nexus S 4g - and the evo 3d just came out). However, things like this rarely go as planned, so I expect dual core to reach some potential in about a year and a half - which would leave you with about six months for all the bugs to be worked out.

However, you may benefit from the dual core sooner if you are into phone games. However, with the Nexus S 4g, you will be getting a solid phone - no gimmucks and no experimental problems that may show up and unlike 3d, NFC technology may actually be useful.

Ok, thanks guys! I am definitely leaning towards the Nexus.

I game a little, and most games played OK on my Pre, so they should be Good on the Nexus.

I also think that by the time multi-core phones are used properly, it will be time for a new phone, both for the Nexus and 3D.

This question doesn't have anything to do with the topic, so feel free not to answer it, but...

I heard about a $50 credit if you renew your contract between 7/7 and 8/2, doesn't anyone know anything about this?

Idk about that credit you are taking about. But I do think you get a 75 credit if you renew your contract when it's in its final 6 months

IMO "Pure Android" is overrated. If you're really that hard core, you'll root, rip out the bloat, add Wireless Tether, and hound XDA for developer tweaks that render carrier delays pretty much moot.

Its not overrated when considering that you can get all of the above out of the box without doing anything to it and voiding your warranty.

I can go back to pure stock in less than 10 minutes if I need to invoke my warranty.

Good for you! You forget not everyone wants to root their phone. Furthermore I really doubt there will be as much dev support as there is for the Nexus. That is why I switched from the Epic.

Sure, they don't have to. My point is it's possible to get a better experience by purchasing a newer more current phone and stripping it down than buying a dated phone that's already stripped down.

You also seem to have missed the part where I said it's my opinion. I'm chiming in with my advice since the OP asked for it. I shouldn't have to defend it.

I'm not bashing your opinion at all. The facts are there will never be the dev support for the evo 3D that there is for a nexus phone. Keeping up with the current OS is great but if the roms are crap whats the point.

The EVO line has had and will continue to have a ton of dev support!

ya, but it might be a lot more difficult to code for 3D so the ROMs and everything else may take a lot longer. I'm not a dev, but that is what would make sense to me.

I mean, 4G radios threw them a curveball. I cant imagine how hard 3D coding will be.

I wouldn't have a clue as I'm not a developer either. But devs are EXTREMELY smart people. They figure this stuff out. I mean, sometimes they have a phone rooted before it's even released. We're talking about high end flagship devices here as well, not some low end prepaid 600MHz ghettodroid. There is huge support behind all of the high end stuff on big carriers.

What will you say if/when the Nexus S II comes out with 3D?

The Photon and GSII will draw a lot of the dev support away from the evo 3D at least until HTC gets around to unlocking the bootloader which is at the very earliest in late September.
