Will the official bumper save the Nexus 4 from drops?

I really would like to use the Nexus 4 without a case, but I don't want to drop it and bust up the screen or the back glass. Will the official bumper + front and back invisible screen protector save it from drops?

Saved mine twice already, three foot drops to the concrete.

Depends on how you use your phone. I'm using a poetic bumper with back+front xtremeguard protectors and have no problems with it even after a few small drops. Plus it's nice to still be able to see the phone naked.

Will it "save" it from drops? No, I do not believe the bumper or the front and back screen protectors are made of a gravity defying material.

Will they help save it from shattering when you drop it? Maybe. You are bound to drop your phone at some point or another, but it really depends on the drop. Are we talking a 2 foot drop or a 2 story? I had a case on my Nexus 4 for the longest time. I have only dropped it twice, and that's from the excessive smoothness of the back when I wasn't using the case. I have never dropped it with the case on (kinda defeats the purpose, eh?). But I did not like that my phone did not stand out in all its glory - slim, amazing looking black piece with a chrome and a shiny, sparkly back. I was bummed. Then I discovered the XtremeGuard back-only screen protector. It's tough, durable, gives it a soft touch but its friction quotient is almost that of rubber's, and completely transparent. I took the case off (I still have it, anyone want it? lol), and put the Xtremeguard back protector on, and it is basically impossible to slip from my hand or from a surface. But it doesn't look like I have anything on it at all. I love showing it off again.

So long as a corner of a table or concrete step or something like that where the corner can kind of stab the glass directly, the bumper offers decent protection. Most drops land on flat surfaces and the bumper so far has done quite well. It keeps the glass from contacting the ground on drops.

Im not sure that the bumper will help your nexus.
I ues it without case but always put it in the pouch. This pouch save my nexus many times.

I always wondered about using one of these leather pouches. I would like to use one too but I wouldn't want to have yo keep taking my phone out and putting it back in. It would be my luck that the moment I tool it out would be when I dropped it.

Good point! It might not comfortable to use because you need to use 2 hands to take the phone of the pouch when call. However, it saves me from any scratches and drops and make me happy everytime when I take it takes it out the pouch :)

A bumper seems to work fine against cracks. The back still gets scratched up like crazy though. They seem to magically appear. Gorilla glass on the back would've been awesome.

What kind of bumper do you have?

From I have read, the back is gorilla glass also. I have had my N4 for just over 2 months in the oem bumper and don't have any scratches. Do you carry it in your pocket with other items? Did you peel the cellophane off of the back?

The back is NOT gorilla glass. The front is perfectly fine. Only the back is scratched up. I never put it in my pocket with anything else.

I have read articles that state it is a thin layer of gorilla glass fused to a layer of plastic and have also read articles that state it is not gorilla glass. If you have a good source, one way or the other, I would love to see it. In order for the back to get scratched, something has to be touching it. All you have to do is figure out what and when this is occurring and then take corrective action. For the record, I am very careful with my phone and baby it from being in contact with other objects. It has it's own dedicated pocket and I only lay it on smooth, flat surfaces.

In order for Gorilla Glass to get a scratch, you have to use some force. The screen is perfectly fine while the back has tons of minor scratches when I never once drop my phone. There are lots and lots of complains about it on this forum. Those are my sources.

I understand that your back is getting scratched up, I can't refute that, but something has to be scratching it. Gorilla glass does not scratch that easily, which is why I asked you if you peeled the thin layer of cellophane off of the back. It would show scratches easily. Otherwise, there would have to be something coming in constant contact with the back for it to get so scratched. Even if it does scratch easily for you, something still has to contact it to scratch it. The only thing that touches the back of my phone are my fingers and the inside of my pocket, so I have no scratches. I see lots of complaints on this forum about the back, but almost all are about the back cracking/shattering when dropped and in some case with temperature change.
