Will we be disappointed in the SoC that will be in the GS3?

Rumors are that the GS2 will come with a 1.4 Ghz quad core processor which would indicated an Exynos 4414. If they come out with "just" a dual core it would be the 4212. Both of these processors have the Mali 400 gpu, and while it is a powerful GPU, it's also the same one that's in the current GS2. Yes, it will be clocked higher and have a 25% increase in performance over what's in the GS2, but expectations are high for the GS3 to be the ultimate beast of a phone, and using the same chip with mildly bumped specs is not what I would expect from Samsung to put into their new flagship line, not when they have 5 series Exynos processors working already along with the 6 series Mali GPU.

When they announced the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 and the Note 10.1, people also expected higher specs, what Samsung delivered were nice tablets with nice new software, but only a modest bump in specs, even a downgrade in specs in one case (camera). Then again, there is this rumored 11" tablet with a retina display and hopefully the new 5 series chip.

So, would you be disappointed if the GS3 did come out sporting a 4414 with a Mali 400 GPU? If it were, I think the S4 Snapdragon would be a better choice, we might land up getting that chip because of LTE compatibility. Does the 4414 support LTE?

I know we are all excited for this phone, but I hope Samsung does it right and gives us more than just a warmed over version of the same chip people already have in the GS2.

Take your time Sammy, and do it right!

It seems like we are certainly setting ourselves up for disappointment... It will be very hard for Sammy to follow up on the "worldbeater" that was the GS2... At the time, it was thinner than anything, had by far the best screen, the best camera, and was the smoothest (arguably still is) device out there... With the increasing competition, that will be hard to best...

Regardless, I'm keeping my expectations optimistic. An HD Super Amoled+, exynos of some sort and improved camera will make for an amazing phone, especially if they can squeeze it into a thin form factor without sacrificing battery. From all indications (reference benching/extrapolation), the Exynos they choose will outperform the S4, especially in the graphics department. I hope Sammy goes with a strong dual core over a weaker quad if it comes down to it - performance trumps the "wow" factor. Overall, if it doesn't absolutely slay everything else, I can see at least some people complaining. It was the same situation when the EVO 3D followed the EVO. The 3D is a great phone and superior the original all-around, yet people complained because it wasn't Earth-Shattering like it's predecessor. If that's the sort of standard people adopt, they are destined for disappointment.

Simply put, there's no way to know for sure ahead of time which phone will be THE phone for that year. Judging by the original Galaxy S, it would've been nigh impossible for anyone to predict that Sammy would step up their game that much for the next incarnation... I'm excited to see what the next couple of months will hold... Certainly didn't expect HTC's One series to leave such a positive impression on me. It's anybody's guess what phone I'll be sporting come the end of summertime...

I really dont know what you guys expect. The Galaxy S2 phones just came out around October so it's not like the next version would be a huge jump.

I'm FAR too concerned with if its coming to Verizon or not to be worried about that.

The time frame is going to be about the same as the one going from the Galaxy S to the GS2. Between the two of them there was a huge jump. With HD Super Amoled + screens and either dual or quad core cpus based on either Arm 9 or 15, if you pick the cream of the crop of the new available hardware, Samsung could easily pull off a jump in performance and features equal to or exceeding the jump they took from the Galaxy S to the S2. Lets face it, the Galaxy S was a huge jump from whatever other phone Samsung had produced before. Wasn't there former top dog the Samsung Moment? The Epic 4G blew that thing away and the Epic 4G touch did the same thing. It's no wonder we expect big things out of Samsung!

Like I said above, I hope they take their time, for now, we have the ICS update to look forward to.

And as far as Verizon getting it? I wouldn't worry about it too much, they were supposed to get the S2, the only reason they didn't was because they took the Galaxy Nexus instead which was a wise choice in my opinon.

Yeah the Samsung Moment was a dog, but I didnt think the Epic 4G was much better. I do agree that there was a huge jump between that and the S2 though. Samsung could pick the cream of the crop hardware but it's unlikely that they would be willing to do so this soon. I mean we already have quad core processors but they havent really penetrated the market yet, at least not in the U.S. If the Galaxy S3 were to be released later this year it would be more likely to have such high end hardware.

Like most technology, we're going to start to see the law of diminishing returns come into play. The tech grows by leaps in the beginning and then in small increments later on due to saturation and reaching the point where there is no longer a larger perceived difference between older tech. TVs have hit this point which is why 3D is being pushed so hard...it's a way to market. People won't perceive the difference between 1080p and 4K like they did with SD to HD. You notice in the GS2 ads and the Galaxy Note ads, they're focusing on software features rather than hardware features. This is because all the high end phones from each manufacturer will already handle the existing software without issues.

looking at galaxy nexus trying to run live wallpapers shows some limitations in the hardware, it just doesn't look as fluid as on my phone which handles anything without any slowdown. The nexus has many more pixels to push, so I suppose as long as the s3 is as smooth as the s2 is now then I would be happy.

The Galaxy Nexus is over-rated, over-priced junk and imho is not a fair representation of Samsung at all.

I am confident that whatever chip we get with the S3, the phone will spank the Nexus and in the very least meet the competition at eye level and stand tall. If not it will exceed all others, and make me a happy camper.

It only took me 3 days with the Galaxy Nexus to know it wasn't a good phone, and I blame Google on this one as odd as that sounds. Let's just pray that the S3 comes to Verizon and in a timely manner lol

5250: happy
4412: disappointed

also, blacksapphire, the s2 came out in october because of american carrier failure, it was announced at mwc last year and released in...may?
