I don't get all of the crying over this. I can cancel my $59/mo Roadrunner Internet and pay $30 on my cell bill to do the same thing? I'll save the $30/mo and get the hotspot that's good anywhere I go in town... not just at home.

I say not sure just yet, because I don't currently need it, but with the job change coming up it would be nice to have while out and about. So in a couple months maybe, but not just yet. I want it, but not going to pay $30 right now for it.

Once they have 4G in Louisville, I will probaly get it to use with my iPad and laptop. Rhe 3G on my iPad can be pretty slow.

I am considering it. I currently have a MIFI and pay $55 per month, so this will save me $25 per month. I still have 14 months left on contract (I think), so the ETF will be $140, I think. So it will take 6 months to make up the difference, but it looks like it will be worth it.

I don't get paying $59/mo for internet. I'm on a DSL Extreme 3mpbs connection that sets me back $24.99/mo. Since I'm only 4 months into the contract, even if paying $5 more a month to consolidate my services were attractive, I'd still have to pay DSLE a $150 ETF. I'll revisit the option when I'm off contract, but in the meantime, I'll root my Evo and tether with Froyo's native functionality, thank you very much.

$30 is way too steep for me. Basically, I would just use it for myself, and maybe my wife, when we go out of town. It's too bad they don't have scaled pricing based on usage. I wouldn't be using it to set up a WiFi Hotspot at a coffee shop, so my usage would be on the low side.

Also, I can't drop my home cable, because I use a Slingbox (app coming soon to Android) and we have VOIP for our "landline." I still need Internet access for both of those devices when I am, and my phone is, away from home.

One last thought... Using if full time as a hotspot at home would require it to be plugged in most of the time at home, and I'm wondering if it would heat up because of the continuous use, and thus shorten the life of the hardware. Not a huge problem for people here, as most will have new phones in one year, 2 max. :D

Pretty much with you. On paper, it's a great concept; it just doesn't fit my needs. In essence, I'd have to get it on both lines (self and wife) if I got rid of home internet. We use VOIP too.

$29 for HotSpot?

Is anyone going to pay $29 for the hotspot? Please tell me that the developers are going to root this phone real fast and get wireless tethering on it. Pretty PLEEEEASE!!!

I don't need tethering for 8 computers, just one. I have a rooted Sprint Hero now and I LOVE the W/T so much, but it would be VERY hard to pay $29 a month for it when I don't use it everyday or even that often. It is just really handy to have when you need it (traveling, hotel, work that has crazy firewalls) but not something I use often enough to justify $29 a month. That is crazy!

Hoping those devs will go crazy on the Evo very soon.

JUNE 4th!!!

why root it (although rooting is amazing) froyo (android 2.2) is going to have thethering built in natively. also, there are tethering apps you can buy on the market. I hotspot is more so you can provide internet to others, or your house/apt so you dont have to pay monthly for cable.

also, Froyo should be out in the next month or so, so you shouldnt have to wait long.

Even with it available in Froyo, won't Sprint have a way to disable that? Also this is the only thing that I'm not to excited about. If sprint had decided to do a $20 fee for both the wifi hotspot AND the premium data package, I would've been all in.

Not sure if I'll really be using the mobile hotspot all that much.

HUH? Sprint with a speedy update???

:rolleyes:What on Earth makes you think that the Evo will get the 2.2 (Froyo) update anytime soon? Look at their history getting the Hero updated. Not to great! I have a feeling that the dev's will have Froyo on rooted Evo's WAY before Sprint does. It will take Sprint so long to figure out a way to disable the tethering in Froyo.

I would only use it when traveling and not in a free WiFi hotspot. Since I don't travel for work that much anymore, I wouldn't be using it except on the rare out of town vacation. Not cost effective for me at $30/mth.

But, I'm thinking that there is a chance that Sprint may reconsider this decision, maybe. At least if they were smart they would.

I wont, dont think I need a 128kbps connection for my laptop when I already have a 10Mbps at home. even if I lived in a 4G area I wouldnt do it. if there is a workaround for it to do it through root or something I might. but when you use the phone as a modem, does sprint see only the phones MAC address, or can it see all the different ip's/MAC's or whatever of the other devices that would let them know you are using the hotspot feature without paying?

I don't get why people are up in arms about this charge? It is basically like having an overdrive built in to the evo (but better since it supports 8 rather than 5). Current overdrive/mifi customers pay 50-60/month and have to sign up for a separate 2 yr contract with ETF. With the EVO, you only carry 1 device, it costs about half the price, no extra contract, no brainer. Why would they make this feature free when they sell the overdrive/wireless usb for laptops?

I wonder if I can activate it on the months needed and then deactivate. I only will use this when inet goes down at home 2-3 times a year for a few days...

Yep. Turn it off and on as needed - one month at a time I believe. (you can't turn it on and off daily)
