Win a Samsung Droid Charge! @DroidLanding Twitter contest

An Android Central user won in Detroit. I was literally parked across the street, so I ended up being the first person there. But they had a really good hiding spot. So, if that guy ends up reading this, congrats!

EDIT: They're being really slow about updating it. It was announced at 12:07 and was found probably... I'd say 15 minutes later.

Willing to say how they hid it? I'm curious about it. Every site is different but it's just interesting seeing how creative they can be at using cover in a building. I've had just as much fun watching the videos and seeing where they hid it. I love this sort of stuff.

Oh, certainly. The spot was really weird. When I entered the restaurant, I realized it was three stories. After poking around for about 10 seconds near the entrance, a lady who looked like am employee told me it was on the third floor. I presume she was doing that with everybody, but since I was the first person, she probably didn't really notice or something right away? I dunno.

Anyways, I go up to the third floor and it's this room that looks like a lounge of some sort. There was a bar (which we were told it was not behind), some couches, a TV and entertainment stand, and a full kitchen. I looked through the couches and under all of the furniture, etc. Looked EVERYWHERE in the kitchen. After like 15 minutes, everybody was like, "... what?"

Eventually, it was found behind some wood paneling above the sink. It doesn't sound like a weird spot, but you'll see from the video that it was kind of odd.

I'm the guy with the white/purple baseball T-shirt and black Puma beanie. :P

So like a hood vent but simply over the sink? That sounds really tough but I'll have to see the video.

Sorta, yeah. But it was made out of wood, and it wasn't really a vent. Like they had a light mounted there, and it was taped on the inside of the wood rectangle that surrounded the light. I mean in retrospect it wasn't THAT hard of a spot, but there were TON of potential places in the room that I thought were much more likely. But, that's the luck of the draw!

Are you hunting one down?

Thanks Kaleb, good stuff, am waiting for them to post the vid now.. Any idea why they did Detroit at 12noon local time???

Not a problem. One more thing: If a guy with a camera starts following you around intently, you're probably pretty close. Every time I walked by the kitchen area, I noticed a few of the Verizon people look up (they were pretend-reading magazines and books).

And I have no idea. It really came as a shock to me. I live in Toledo, Ohio (about 45 minutes south of Detroit), so my buddy and I left at 11am. I figured they'd probably do it around 3-ish, seeing as it's the middle of a work day, so we went to lunch when we got there. Sitting in the restaurant, and just as I get my food, I get the tweet and run across the street, lol.

I'm gonna throw my hat into the Columbus one as well. A former roommate of mine lives there, and I've been meaning to visit him anyways. I could get there in two hours if I make good time. At least I'll get another 25 dollar gift card. :P

Speaking of which, I'd be more than happy to help anybody out with their city if anybody knows anything special about Columbus. I narrowed the Detroit one down to like, one city block.

Try within half a mile or so of Milem Square. ;)

EDIT: It was luck that happened to be across the street. It's pretty easy to narrow it down to maybe a half-mile radius, but inside of that it's really a mystery.

Well yeah but that is a pretty big territory and also a lot of places to hide. Like if we had a clue if it would be under something or behind something, that would REALLY help..

Oh, I agree completely. Or if they had clues leading up to it, like they did with the Droid X hunt. Even though Detroit's last two clues were bull**** and had nothing to do with the final place. For example, saying you can see the Ambassador Bridge from where it is hidden, despite the fact that it was inside a restaurant, and the restaurant wasn't even close to being able to see the bridge. But I digress.

I guess the important thing to remember is this: The coordinates have not changed since day one. I've run 5 or 6 of them through, comparing the final "zoom level" to the initial coordinates that were gained through the source code, and they all ended up being the same. And then, the location is usually within a few blocks of those coordinates.

So, ya whip out Google Maps and look around. Rule out places like McDonald's and big chains like that, because they probably wouldn't allow a company like Verizon to put on a promotion in their stores. Look for "local haunts." The Crab Pot in Seattle, PYT in Philly, and Cheli's in Detroit are great examples. They're local places (and note that they're all restaurants) that seem like they'd be big to local people.

Look in the area you defined as "suspect," and look through the possible places. Process of elimination out places that don't make sense (big chains, pharmacies, hospitals, etc.) and make a list of possible places. Restaurants, sporting venues, and theaters are good ideas, among others. Look through the reviews, and try to decide which ones are real hits with the locals.

Then, sit in the middle somewhere.

For example, let's take Washington D.C.

Google Maps

Look around. It's at a cemetary-- nope, not there. Looking around, there actually isn't a whole lot. So this might be completely off... but I'll compose a list of possible places and we'll see if I'm right.

Hitching Post
Fort Totten Park (or area surrounding)
Fort Slocum Park " "
Probably not at the university.

The following are all really close together:
--------
Meridian Pint
Redrocks
Room 11
Pete's Apizza
--------

I'd probably put 5 bucks on it being one of these places. I could be wrong, but we'll see shortly I guess. And even if it's not one of these places, you have the general area down. Traveling would be, at most, half a mile through what appears to be a light-traffic area.

Miami will be a bit tougher, because there are a TON of places around the coordinate where it could be. I'll make a guess list though here in a minute.

Nope. Further east.

There's just a lot of guess work involved. Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, there's a whole lot of luck.

True. But being able to narrow it down to less than a mile of traveling helps a LOT. There's a lot of stuff in big cities, and working with "Miami" compared to one or so square miles of Miami could mean the difference between winning or beefing it.

New method for DC. If it's not at one of my guessed locations, it's probably somewhere weird within this red square.
