My OG Droid still in service on it's third life
I didn't feel I could capture the wear on my droid with just one picture so I made a collage of several

and I couldn't just say it was beat up without telling the tale of all that it has been through...
I love my droid, I got it on release day at 7am eastern time, I was outside waiting for them to open the doors.
Having had many windows mobile phones prior the smartphone was not new, but android was to me, and to most at that point.
Little did I know how much it would change my world and simplify my devices, gone are the GPS, the mp3 player, the 411 calls, the cds of stuff that doesn't fit on the mp3 player, the point and shoot camera, the guide book or map when traveling, the sub-way schedule...
Most phones only get worse as time goes on from purchase, not my droid, with release after release new features hit my device improving it all the time.
When my warranty expired I rooted the phone and moved up to Gingerbread, trying cyanogenmod and others before settling on Peter Alfonso's GPA15/16 builds.
When google music was announced I added that too (I already had the app thanks to the forums!) and now I have my huge live Phish collection in the cloud and my monthly usage has grown to 4GB.
In summary my droid has grown and gotten better and better over time, always giving me more than I expected and always trusty and happy to do my bidding.
Me on the other hand I think I just keep taking and dishing out abuse.
First I had some dings, nothing big, I don't use a case as I always use my car dock (music via bluetooth). The power button went down and never came back up to where it was at first (although it is pressable).
The
first big thing to go was the battery door ... somehow one of the things the little metal tabs catch on just broke and now the door is slightly open on that corner.
Then I did something few will admit,
while playing with my droid one I was doing a number two and I dropped my beloved companion in the bowl!
Quickly fished it out, removed the battery and wiped all the water I could off of it immediately.
Overnight I placed the phone in a zip lock with a handfull of rice.
The next day i put the battery back in and was suprised to have a fully functioning phone.
Seemed my droid had more lives than I expected!
So time went on (I never told anyone the toilet issue "Ew you put that next to your face!") and then one day it had a short fall of a 2-3 feet onto tile. It hit perfectly and the
screen cracked
I lived with the crack for a week until it
turned into a full blown spider shatter.
At this point most people would have just gone for the upgrade to whatever the best device was at the time (and be showing a picture of their broken phone here begging for a new droid 3 because they already spent their upgrade on something else).
But not me, I paid ~$75 to have the glass replaced, to bring my droid back to life again.
Unfortunately (I'm not going to name any names) the repair although it did return the phone to operation again was flawed.
First i noticed the top of the screen was no longer below the metal bezel.
Then i noticed
dust was starting to get between the glass and the display below.
So now I have a phone that works but has many bumps and bruises as well as significant dust under the screen... and still another few months before I hit the two year mark
Neways some highlights of the condition
Battery door ajar and
separation between the black plastic and the soft touch back at the microusb port,
Camera button totally tatered,
screen no longer flush,
back panel around the camera is popping up,
grill on the speaker is broken and dented, dust
under the screen,
keyboard has scrapes and is coming up in the corners,
power button requires extra effort to push as it has permanently lost it's spring, wear on the back metal of the screen part from continous use, wear on the keyboard side, some bowing of the frame near the volume rocker oh and
did I mention it took a bath, in a toilet?
yeah my droid has been through hell and back (and it's probably my fault).
So please send me the shiny new droid 3!
And don't worry I'm still keeping my og droid, going to use it as a windows media center remote and for internet browsing over wifi once i swap over to the droid 3, cause this og still has a few lives left
