It has a lot of promise. And they aren't splintering the system like Google did with Android.

Hmmm, I think the cell companies are accomplishing that more than Google.

Nobody told HTC or Motorola to only make their custom UIs compatible with 1.5 or 1.6.

As for 7 showing promise....maybe.

Several sites showing limited multitasking seems to say otherwise though.

Keep in mind that Google is doing things to help limit the amount of low performance android handsets. That's where the Google store comes in where you can get the nexus 1. I mean yes it only sells the nexus at the moment but they are only going to be selling android handsets that meet the standards of what they are looking for. It's not perfect but I do think Microsoft will blow it like they always do.
