Wipe after a Random Update?

So my friend had her Inc tell her that she had an update to the OS. It was a weird pop up notification. I told the that is usually not the way the OS updates, that it will give you a notification in the notication bar not a pop up. So she does the update and after it completes, her phone was wiped of all her apps and contacts. Anyone know what could have happened to her phone. Kinda thinking that she was dooped and may have got some malicious app. She was running the latest version of the OS to my knowledge. I checked that after the wipe update, that she is running the same version of the OS as my Inc and she was.

A couple of people have had this problem recently. There are no OTA updates currently pushing, so someone must have made some malicious code. If you receive an update and don't see any buzz about it here, be very suspicious.

Updates both pop up and go to the notification bar, by the way.

This is the second time I've seen some one mention this odd update. The last official update was pushed back in November.
