Wireless charging or uncharging?

So I put my phone on a wireless charger before I went to bed. Looked at the phone in the morning and the battery was down to zero. This has happened before to me and my wife (same phone). I get if I don't place it properly on the charger it will not charge, but why does it kill the battery? It was at 48% when I put it on the charger. If I had just left it on the table it would not have drained anywhere near that. Thoughts?

There something left running (in the background)? Presumably you checked that it started charging when you put it on there?

there is always something running in the bacground from google services to whatever app is calling home. Then you have mobile, wifi and bluetooth that if on, will be always searching for a signal. Then you have your weather apps, clocks, email, notifications and other info that is always being updated. It is normal.

I charge my Pixel 9Pro Xl every night on my wireless charger with no issues.

As for the OP's issue I have no clue why it would discharge if not placed perfectly on the charger.

You're right but they shouldn't run the battery of the phone down to 0 in 5 to 7 hrs. If they do the phone has a serious issue. The phone just sitting on a table should run for days if untouched which essentially the OP did only on a wireless charger.

Just spitballing here, but is it possible you placed the phone on the charger in such a way that it was just on the edge of charging, and therefore repeatedly starting to charge and then stopping? In that situation, I wonder if the constant triggering of the screen to turn on (to show the charging animation) all night might have been enough to drain the battery. On top of that, if the repeated initiation of wireless charging was enough to generate heat, that might have also accelerated the battery drain.

But if it thinks it is video-streaming that would easily run the battery flat overnight. There is one app I use which act like it is video-streaming even thought it is actually audio only, but that does close down properly when asked to.

Ok, it is not from anything running in the background. I have left the phone on a table overnight (by mistake) and it barely discharged.

Did you look at the battery usage stats to see which apps had used how much juice?

I think something is going on with the wireless charger, what brand is it? Do you have another one to test ? I would monitor this on a wired cable charging and see if the same happens overnight.

It has happened to my wife as well on a different charger.

Well, it happened again last night. I restarted the phone before placing on the wireless charger as I always do. Looked like it started to charge but when I took it off the charger it was on my home screen (not the lock screen) and was down to 2%. Had to put it on the wired charger. And before anyone again suggests an app or apps is draining it, I can just leave it off the charger and it will not discharge significantly. We have 3 wireless chargers and it can happen on any of them. I can only conclude that if it is not exactly placed right on the charger or somehow slightly moves after I leave the phone is fighting to keep making a connection. Note, this does not happen very often.
