I'm a new refuge from WebOS who just got a Photon 4G 3 days ago. I've got everything setup on my phone the way I want except wireless tethering. All the wireless tethering apps that I have found either require you to root the phone or dosen't work with Motorola. Can someone give me some advise on what is a good wireless tethering app and if I have to root the phone, how to do it?

By the way, I love the Photon. Still trying to get over my Pre habits. :D

I don't have an answer for your question, but I can totally relate to the habits. I keep trying to swipe up to get into card view. I've only had my photon for three days too.

Yep, still swiping here too! And too many dang menus to get to stuff. But I do love the phone!

I got my Photon on Saturday. Looks like HP has helped Motorola. The habit am still try to break is swipe back and forth. There is actually no way to move forward.

But this phone has so fast, except for Flickr. Both the gallery and some top Flickr apps are much slower at loading many photos than Mundo. Mundo must played some neat tricks.

Anyway, i am interested in mobile hot spot, too.

I came from webOS (Pre -) too and the fact you haven't already rooted is pretty shocking to me. On my palm, everything was tricked out on it.

I too made the switch from WebOS Pre(-) to the photon. Love the speed. Answer to your question, all the tethering (mobile hot spot) apps on the android market or that came stock with the phone's wireless settings all require you to purchase the Sprint $29.99 mobile hot spot in addition to your plan. It won't work without it. :-\

Unfortunately you're best option is just to root and get the Wifi tethering app. I just did this last night and took me a good 5 minutes to do.

Follow these instructions on this video, can not be simpler.

One thing he doesn't state in the video is to make sure you install superuser from the market place first.

How to root Photon 4g NO HD DOCK NEEDED (command line) - YouTube

[ROOT] Photon Torpedo, dockless root access - xda-developers

Ive been rooted. The wireless tether apps dont have the necessary drivers yet. The 'access control denied' message pops up but shows granted superuser dialogue. I have superuser installed. It just doesnt work. Hopefully they add the Photon as soon as possible so it works. I need my tether for work on football sundays. Also I need it for my new HP Touchpad ;)

I don't get it? I'm using PDANet to wirelessly tether to my tablet. It didn't cost a dime and I don't have hotspot.

Can you elaborate? I actually have PDANet. How do you get it to wirelessly tether? I would like to connect my Touchpad to it. I see Bluetooth and USB options on the application :|

I've heard good things about PDANet but I have not installed it yet. Any special instructions to set it up properly?

I just paired the photon with the tablet (galaxy) via bt. In pdanet I turned on wireless and on the galaxy I setup the connection to be used for Internet. I will elaborate later when I ha en some time.

I have not tried since the ota.

Did you have to root the phone to use pdanet?

Also, do you have to root the phone to tether via a USB cable to a laptop?

What's up with the hotspot on the Photon? I never signed up for the plan through Sprint, but it looks like it works out of the box. Will Sprint see this and add the $30 to next month's bill if I use it?

Thinking about it as a backup plan should I lose internet in the hurricane (NJ here)

Don't have to root for PDANet, but it is not as fast as the Sprint WiFi Hotspot or Wireless Tether when rooted. Just pay a one time fee for PDANet and use either a usb cable or Bluetooth.

Bluetooth tether works even without PDANet.

A wifi solution with root would be great, but I haven't seen it.

I'd heard that some phones can prevent PDAnet from working. Has anyone tried it on their non-rooted photon yet?

Has anyone found a good wired tethering solution other than PDA net?

I use to use Wired Tether for Root users but haven't had luck with it on the photon

Easy tether pro works. I bought it back in the day when it was 4.99. Now it's 10 bucks. But it works flawlessly and I used it at my in laws last night to up load images for my art class I attended.

Haven't tried the hotspot. Should be great if it works as 4g is now on where I live!
