With rumored S-Pen support on the S21U, is this the last Note model??

C'mon now - when the first Note came out everyone made fun of the size saying it wasn't necessary. I was the only "clown" walking around with this gigantic phone. Hell, Steve Jobs also declared that people don't want big phones or styli.

that was so true. When the original note was announced, I was actually looking for a bigger phone. Ran across an ad about it. I read a lot of articles and comments about it stating that it was too big. stating nobody wanted to be seen talking on such a large phone, stating it would look stupid against the face and more. I really do not recall any positives articles or comments about it. But it was the biggest phone I could fine where I would not have to strain my old eyes nor have to do much scrolling. It also had a stylus that I would be using so would no longer need to carry two separate devices, a PDA for note taking and a phone.

I swapped from an iphone 3gs to the note and not looked back. Every couple of years I would look at other larger phones but stuck with the note series. The biggest draw for me now is the s-pen storage port since it is no longer the largest kid on the block. As I said in a previous post, no port, no phone. Even if attached to the back like one of the tabs, it would still be easy to lose or stabbed me since I carry the phone in the front pants pocket. My only regret is all the apps I purchased for the iphone that will no longer be used.

People said that the phablet was a gimmick......

Well, lets also remember and put into perspective what a 7" Samsung Galaxy J7 Max phablet looked like back then compared to the 6.9" N20 we can compare it to. Yeah, it would look a little... "clownish"... hold that sucker to ones ear back then lol. :p

But, yes, we have come a long way... :)

With that said, side note I really like that new iPhone 12 Mini. If it were a bit cheaper, that would be my go to 2nd phone for when I’m going out for my runs or mountain biking on the trails, etc. :)

Usually I dismiss this yearly as it always pops it head up around the next s launch but think it's becoming clear it could actually happen this year :(

I won't be moving to the fold at its near 2k price, if it happens it will be time to ride out this Ultra for a few years and take my time deciding where I go next, and I won't be ruling out going to Apples eco system.

I will never own a 'fold'. I would be the person who cracks the screen on the fold or damages it some other way. I have a Note 9. I'll keep it until it dies and then probably replace it with the Note 10 if that's the last one. After that, I'm not sure what I'll do, but I'd seriously consider leaving Samsung if the Note line goes away.

I can't believe if this is the last Note, it was blessed with the Exynos 990 in the UK lol.

With the rumor of the S21U supporting S-Pen... will the N20U be the last?

I mean except for the built-in silo, why release a Note 8 months after the S21U only for an S22 to come out four months later in January?

Interesting question. I think Samsung has been wanting to kill off the Note line for a while. Not based on the rumors, but just what they have been doing (or not doing with the line). Samsung has been forced to make compromises for the Note series for a while because the S-Pen takes valuable room inside that now, especially with 5G, is needed, but unavailable for other things. The Notes used to be leaders in technology, but really, except for the slightly faster + version of the 865 chip, a slightly larger screen, a slightly improved camera and the S-Pen, it is not that different. Don't get me wrong, I love my Note 20 Ultra, but I don't believe it is eons ahead like the Notes used to be. I had the S20 Plus and thought that was a great phone as well, but I wanted the larger screen (and I got a great trade in deal on the S20 I bought used).

My take is that this may be the way to kill it off by putting specs on the S21 Ultra that the Note will never match. I do think there will be a Note 21, but except for the slightly larger screen (S21 Ultra is rumored to be 6.8" as verses maybe the 6.9?) and maybe a slightly improved camera, the S21 Ultra will have more because they have the room to play. The S21 Ultra is rumored to have a 5,000 ma battery because it has no internal S-Pen. Samsung will make a case that looks like the S-Pen is built in and the hue and cry from the lower battery life in the Note 21 that we will see on these forums next year in comparing the Note 21 and the S21 will probably kill the Note. People will complain, but I think Samsung has reached a barrier that is hard to deal with. They need the room. The internal S-Pen has to go.

"IF" Samsung thinks that that the "SPen has to go" OR "the only way to get get one is to transition to a 'Fold'", then the entire Note Community should collectively, get up and LEAVE SAMSUNG! Let's see how they swallow that... (if you could get folks to do it!!!)

They could just make the Note a bit thicker to make room for the battery

Until Samsung sys it official that the Note line gone , I'm taking it as rumors.

They could perhaps, but they didn't this year. The S20 Ultra has a 5000 ma battery now, but it doesn't support the S-Pen, so if you want the pen, you go for the Note with its smaller battery. But it looks like the S21 will have both larger battery and the S-Pen and a case to hold it. Time will tell how people react, but it will invite comparisons.

I didn't say they should have made it thicker. I'm just saying it's not that big a deal to make up for the space for the Spen. I don't see a need to make the battery bigger then it's current size. With rapid charging there is little need for an all day charge for most people. Unfortunately they can't make everyone happy. As for having to use a special case just to hold the Spen.....that's probably the dumbest idea ever, since it will make the device even larger than just making the Note a little larger.

I don't think making a case so it can hold the s-pen is dumb. There will be cases made that would do just that if it rumors are true. I think the phone could stand to be a bit wider.

I think the ultimate goal is to phase out the note line. However I don't see that happening until they can pack a s pen inside the fold. When samsung figures out the screen tech and you can use the pen without damaging the screen I think that's when the note line will diappear. But personally I think we are a few years away from that still. That's my guess.

I think it's dumb because the current form factor is cleaner and nothing is really achieved by doing it that way except to make the Spen an accessory. That's thoughtless for those that prefer not to use a case or prefer skins. The current method of providing an S series and Note is a win for everyone except Samsung if the goal is to make just one Series.

That's assuming everyone wants a fold.

If it does I won't be upgrading. What is the point of pen support if you have nowhere to put the pen? Something else I have to carry with me and hope I don't lose it or break it.

Totally agreed, the point is to have the pen installed within the phone!
