Word recognition

I'm brand new to this forum and I think I have what's undoubtedly a really simple question/problem: The word recogntion feature -- type a few letters and Android starts suggesting words -- doesn't appear anymore. Not a big deal, unless you're a crappy typist with pre-texting thumb skills and lazy, all of which describe me. Is this a setting that I've inadvertantly changed, or what, if any, fix is there for this?
