Worth Switching to AT&T from Verizon for the Nexus 5?

I'm currently a GNex user on VZ. I love the service I get. I like the discount I get through my company on my bill. I hate the slow updates but love that I can just flash a fresh ROM w/ extra features and the latest build w/ stability....

I'm debating on switching to AT&T for the Nexus 5. I do love love love the Nexus experience, but it would take a lot of work to make the switch since I have to pay an ETF for the other phone on the family plan. There is about a year left on the other smartphone.

VZ has the LG G2, Moto X, S4, and HTC One. Great phones. But none look to be all that hackable... maybe the S4 and One, but I haven't looked too muich into it. The Moto X is abysmal as far as dev support right now :\

What do you think?

The only one of those with any Dev support is the HTC one. If you like the gnex try to go with an n5 and try aio wireless which is ran by Att. I believe it is cheaper than Att postpaid and of course there is no contract. If you need LTE though, I'm unsure if aio plans have LTE.

i was with Sprint since 2008 and just switched to AT&T GoPhone for my new Nexus 5 and love it. i paid a $120 ETF but sold my old CDMA phones and combined with the $10+ monthly savings with GoPhone vs. the postpaid Sprint plan, the ETF will be paid for (mental accounting) within a few months.

Prepaid Cell Phone Plans, GoPhone Plans, & Prepaid Smartphone plans from AT&T

i love the freedom of no contracts, plug and play SIM card freedom, and of course all of the benefits of Nexus - immediate OS updates, price, etc. the AT&T plan is only $60/month and gives me Unlimited Talk/Text and 2GB of LTE data. buy an extra 1GB for $10 as needed. in my travels so far i have found that AT&T coverage has been great. i have yet to drop a call or not have a good data connection - and LTE is very FAST and almost ubiquitous. i will never ever sign another carrier contract and i will never use a CDMA carrier again - especially one like Verizon that locks everything down and refuses to be just the "dumb pipe" that i want it to be.

IMO - get the Nexus 5 and run as fast as you can away from Verizon.

good luck.

I just switched from Page Plus (Verizon MVNO) to Straight Talk when I bought the 5. True LTE (AT&T) speeds up to 2.5 GB for only $45/month. ST will throttle down to 2G after you hit the limit, but AIO throttles from the get go (7-8 Mbps). Also be aware that AIO is getting folded into Cricket.

I was surprised at how good customer service was at Straight Talk. That was my one worry coming from Page Plus.

Very interesting information. Seem's like there are a good amount of boutique service providers... how do I know truly how good their service is? I don't want to have to worry about my phone not getting service.

Best thing to do is ask around your area. I was going to switch to AIO until a friend of mine endorsed Straight Talk. In terms of finding an MVNO that serves up LTE, there really aren't that many (yet). And since it's prepaid, you can just try them out until you're happy.

I hated Verizon so much I think I would have switched to anyone to escape them. Even Sprint.

The only thing they have going for them is coverage. Thats it. In every other way, T-Mobile has been better. They are bossy and their phones are bloaty. Verizon is expensive as hell for what you get too.

Well cost isnt an issue bc I get a company discount which makes it cheaper than AT&T. They are priced the same btw... I have never had any issues with VZ besides the phone selection.

Many companies who have good discounts with Verizon also do with AT&T. I know mine does. CDMA just seems to always have a hitch somewhere. AT&T has the best selection of devices.

The main difference I saw was in support, especially at their storefronts. T-Mobile people seemed to have much more of a clue when it came to the phone itself. Verizon people mostly spouted PR propaganda or hearsay. Like what you would expect from a salesman. T-Mobile people were more like phone nerds.

It was bad enough that when I had a tech issue I would just look online first, because I did not even expect Verizon could help me. Most of the time talking to Verizon people felt like I was educating them. If I am educating them on their own product, that is not a good sign.

I think a big part of it is that T-Mobile (and other GSM networks) are used to people bringing in their own devices. So they have no choice but to be knowledgeable because they need to know how to get them to work on their network. Whatever the reason is, I certainly do not miss Verizon's awful tech support.

For my company Verizon is 22% and AT&T is 15%. Big difference. Well not monumental, but AT&T happens to be about $10 more expensive.
