Worth upgrading from M7 to M9?

I just don't understand how it has worse battery life??

HTC One M8:
- 5" 1080p screen
- 2,600mAh battery
- 28nm fab processor

HTC One M9:
- 5" 1080p screen
- 2,840mAh battery
- 20nm fab processor

How is the M9 even getting less battery life than the M8? On specs alone, it should be noticeably better.

I'm wondering if it could have something to do with Sense 7. Seems like the GPS is always searching location to determine which apps to display in the new home widget (home/work/out). Also the new Yelp recommendations in blinkfeed would need GPS always on to show relevant posts by location. I could be completely wrong about that though. I don't plan on using that new home screen widget either way if I get one because I don't like to clutter up my home screen with a bunch of widgets.

Possibly, as advertised, the 810 processor has issues. I'm waiting for release to see some real world results but it doesn't look good at this point. Honestly, my 2012 Moto Razr Maxx HD is still humming along and at this point I see no reason to upgrade to the M9. Even the Samsung S6 has been reported as having worse battery life than the S5. And now it is coming out that all colors and models of the S6 might not be available at launch. It's almost like these companies go out of their way to shoot themselves in the foot. I don't get it. Technology should be advancing, not regressing. Seriously, after a decade of smartphones you would think they could come up with a battery that lasts more than half a day.

I mentioned this in another thread but it's not the same screen. HTC cheaped out and removed the screen memory caching integrated in the screen which assists in overall battery life. I also don't think the 810 is very good. The 820 is promising though. The 10% gain in battery size probably isn't compensating enough. That said, I have read reviews where some are getting 1.5 - 2 days, others that are 12-15 hours. I don't understand why a reviewer woundn't run GSAM the 1 - 2 weeks they had the phone to get a rough screen on time. The other problem will be these were all EU band phones on 3G/4G and battery may take another hit when they are on North American LTE networks and re-tested.

I'm the same, it just needs to have better battery life than the M8

This graph breaks my heart

For those complaining about M7 battery life, you can only expect an extra hour of web browsing since your M7 was new

If you actually read the review that graph is from you'd know that it's before their M9 received the major update that drastically altered pretty much everything relating to the phone's performance. The third paragraph above the graph even says that there will be a part two for the review that contains "a complete workup on new battery life numbers," and down below that "early performance numbers are not going to be applicable, so it’s important to make a distinction between pre and post-update numbers."

tl;dr: results are outdated and irrelevant until it's retested on the critical final software version.

I would definitely say it is worth upgrading. I am like a few of you that had a launch phone from sprint until one horrible day i had to bring it into sprint. Since then nothing but problems. So lets see, it has a bigger screen, faster processor, better cameras, bigger battery, better form and i am comparing this to the m7. When the M8 came out I was shocked since it was not that big of an upgrade and would've said it was a M7+ for all the upgrades it had. I am done with this purple tint crap with the photo's and am glad that we have a great upgrade-able phone for all those that really loved the m7. If you are looking for something radically different, what are you really looking for? If I owned an M8 I would prob not upgrade but an M7 I would def do so. And we all need to be real with ourselves when it comes to photo's. Photo's are subjective to the person viewing it and its applications. I am looking for a phone to take decent pictures to post online and to make some photos to send out to friends and family. No one is looking for professional photos, just as long as the image is clear and sharp. If you want a good camera, then buy a dedicated camera, if you want a cameraphone then buy the nokia.

I am was unsure which phone to get between the m9 and s6, but I have to just be honest and say that the s6 is nice but I dread touchwiz, and to correct touchwiz I would have to root it and put a new rom on it and therefore I hate odin and rooting samsung phones. I would've possibly endured TW if samsung wouldve kept with their waterproof rating but they did not, and knowing how wireless charging goes since I had a palm pre, there goes all durable cases.

If people are paying over $600 for a phone they don't want decent pictures. They expect great photos for that amount of money. I'm not talking professional photography great, talking great for a smartphone. People who use snapchat want great photos. I for one don't want decent photos and I would never buy a decent tv, decent car, or decent laptop. That's just silly to settle for something that's subpar but to each his/her own.

Well then for those that spend $600 for a phone how about you buy a oneplus and a stand alone camera. I would not buy a phone outright especially not this one, and most of the time the carriers don't push for people to buy the phone outright. You have contract price and pay it off price but then again carriers allow you to get a new phone once you pay off 50% or more. I am saying for me to upgrade from an m7 is a big deal. The camera is one aspect of the phone and if that is the main reason you buy a phone again buy the nokia, which got the best ratings for a cameraphone. So like you said, to each his/her own, and you need to take a look at the bigger "picture" with the phone.

I'll keep my M8. I have patience until the M10 comes along with USB-C.

I haven't seen USB-C yet. Isn't the connector bigger/thicker than micro USB? I wonder how that will affect design going forward.

Thanks everyone, going to be buying it later today. Only other decision left is whether or not I use my upgrade or do Verizon Edge.

I bought the m7 the week it came out and I'm having no problems whatsoever with it now. I sent mine in to have the purple tint issue fixed about 4 months after I bought it. I generally run out of battery life at about 8 o'clock at night and that's even with heavy use. My phone looks like new and is so beautiful I just can't imagine buying another one at this time. I hope in about another year the next HTC phone is as attractive as the m7 and is an improvement on the m9. I'll certainly buy one then.

I know it's late, but I just have to chime in. I got my M7 in May of 2013 and I thought the pink hue was a me thing. By the time I looked into it and realized it was a known issue, I was told that my phone was out of warranty and I'd basically have to buy another one, or pay for the repair. They definitely weren't gonna fix it for free.

NO3LANi, Please see my post from last week here:

http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizon-htc-one/525551-no-more-purple-pics.html

I bought my M7 the day it came out and HTC fixed it for me for free two weeks ago. I chatted with the online rep and was shocked when he said it would be repaired for free. I didnt believe the post I read either but thought it was worth a try and it was! I used my old Rezound while the M7 was repaired.
