Would Verizon Messages app update in the background?

I had to restart my phone because it seemed my messaging app was acting screwy. When I did, it was as if I had initialized the app for the first time, walking me through with the tutorial. I think it looks a little different now, but it could just be my mind playing tricks on me.

I guess I should add that my phone made no indication the app was being updated, nor did I do this through the Play store.
