The Sky is Falling!

Just jumping into the fray here without a chute, but oh well. Sprint ID is not the monster a lot of people are making it out to be. I have an unrooted, fully stock Optimus S and you couldn't tell Sprint ID was even on the phone unless you look in the app tray. There is a "Clean" ID that adds no extra software that I use. I also use Launcher Pro so the ID button is gone from the dock. As for flashing advertisements, well that's just simply untrue, and the keylogging thing is just paranoia. ID actually makes it a LOT easier to uninstall apps that previously required root to get rid of (e.g. Sprint TV, NASCAR, Football Live, Sprint Navigation, etc.) Those programs aren't even installed unless you select the Sprint ID. On my phone it takes up a whopping 2 MB, and that is simply because I like some of the wallpapers and kept them when I uninstalled various IDs I was trying. All that being said, Most of those IDs have tons of crap in them, and many of the apps are simply trial apps, or links to the Market to download them. However, anything that is installed via ID is very easily uninstalled, and if you go to Manage Applications>All and clear data, Sprint ID only takes up about 400kb of space, which I think is the icon in the app tray. Just my $2.50, so take it as you will.

never. the less sprint apps the better. or at least make them so they are not always running in the background. i do not care if i have a lot of apps as long as they are not running when i am not using them

Thanks for the input. We will have to take a look once its released. I'm interested in your claim about Nascar and Navigator, etc not being installed unless you tell Sprint ID to do so. They have always been apart of the ROM/OS so unless Sprint went in and physically removed the ".apks" they are still sitting dormant in your system taking up space. Sure they may not be active but that is still kind of defeating the purpose.

I will be interested in seeing what type of space Sprint ID is really taking up. I have a hard time believing Sprint actually created something that does all that and only uses 400kb of space. Thats not Sprint's style.. LOL...

Again, thanks for providing some insight... Not bashing on anything you said or provided so don't take my response the wrong way.

I just read an article written by Taylor Martin where he sees the need of something like Sprint ID for first-time smartphone buyers or those who are not diving deep into Android. This kind of costumers will be lost for the first months, so Sprint ID can be quite helpful. On the other hand, Sprint ID is a leap back for high-end devices such as Epic 4g, Evo and Evo Shift 4g.

I agree with Mr. Martin

@tomy2001, yes I completely agree. For those who are not tech savy or don't choose to be then this would be a welcomed addition. For advanced users or as you mentioned higher end devices this should be an option or not included at all..

This is good news (if true) and makes me feel more at ease with sprint ID. My phone never received the EB13 OTA and I never installed it after seeing what happened to my daughters epic after EB13 reaped it's havoc on it. We ended up getting her phone replaced with one that had eclair loaded.

I'm just hoping this OTA goes better than EB13. If EC05 fixes the issues that are associated with the EB13, then I will not have any problem with sprint ID. A good install of froyo with sprint id will be better than a POS install of (EB13) froyo without sprint id.

Especially if what SandersJC64 said is true about sprint ID.

I agree it should be an option but don't agree that it shouldn't be offered at all. I have a high end phone (epic) but am NOT a power user and most likely will never even root my phone. But to say that because I have a high end phone, I cant get sprint id is just as wrong as saying I have to have it.

The way you make it sound is only tech savy people have high end devices. That's just not true.

I didn't intend on it to come off that way Keith, but for the most part my statement is true. Your more tech savy people are the ones that are buying the higher end devices that understand their full potiental and how to use it. Your average user that doesn't understand much is usually happy with the mid ranged phones because to them they feel all that extra bang for the buck isn't something they will ever use and they simply avoid it. Its hard to believe but a good percent of the general public are still interested in a phone for one thing.. Phone calls.. All the rest is a waste to them..

I believe the higher end phones aimed mainly at the power users and people that are into technology are more than capable of managing their own files and setting up their devices and find something like Sprint ID a complete waste of time and really shouldn't be offered. I bet if the Nexus S or a version of it ever made it to Sprint you wouldn't find it on there and if it did people would be freaking out..

Just my two cents, hopefully it can be easily removed because in my own opinion its a waste of resources.

This is truth, my wife has a Transform with ID on it and she didn't even have Sprint Navigation until I loaded up the ID pack that contained it, installed Sprint Nav, then went back and removed that ID pack but Nav stays.

I personally don't want ID on my Epic, but I don't see it being a problem if it is there, I will just remove what I don't want and move on, or root the thing and be happy.

I am what I consider the average phone buying public. Just like my computer buying, I don't chase technology. Every three or four years, I buy a new phone or computer to stay current. However I rarely get the fastest or most powerful.

I feel when I buy something new it should be loaded with everything possible. That way I have it if I like it and if I don't I can remove it.

So while I agree that we should be able to remove anything we want (it is our phones after all), I think it should be included. Especially on a high end device.

Thats fine, I'm good with that. I will wait to see what the update brings. If my guess is correct on things like NASCAR/FOOTBALL/Sprint Navigator just laying inactive on our devices waiting for Sprint ID to activate them then that is a joke to me.. Those apps, while they don't seem to add up to much do take up resources. If your going to give the user true ability to install and uninstall applications then there shouldn't be any apps laying inactive on your device waiting to be used. That is a "Fail" in my opinion on the Sprint ID idea.

I believe it should be made optional. Give me the option or just leave their Sprint bloatware garbage out of here..

Either way would work for me. The option to remove or the option to install.

My main hope is that it is a better experience than the EB13 OTA.

Yes!!! I do not want to have Sprint bloatware garbage on my device. I don't want something laying inactive on my phone. It is a waste of resource.

I agree with you Keith. Nevertheless, what I am really waiting on the new gingerbread custom rom that it is almost done!!!

I just tried the Beta version and it is faster than the froyo custom roms such as TER, ACE, etc.

Actually, those Sprint apps aren't installed, they aren't laying dormant taking up resources. They have to be installed, not activated. The football and nascar app don't even require installing the sprint id to get them. You can text something (I forget, nfl or nascar?) to 7777 and you are texted a download link.

Yes I understand the " text 7777" junk to NASCAR but if you were to open up our the ROM and look, NASCAR/FOOTBALL/Navigator/ThinkFree, all these apps that normally lie inactive are actually in the ROM.. So they are there, Sprint ID just has you thinking its really doing something.. It may actually go and download the file but it is already there and is simply being written over.

Actually, having just looked at a ROM dump of the Optimus S, those apps are not in the ROM. Now, having said that, it may be a different case with the Epic, as those apps came pre-installed, so they may still show up in the ROM after updating, but I don't know.

Yes could be on the Optimus, or maybe Sprint actually removed them for the Sprint ID versions of Froyo.

Nobody knows for sure how Sprint ID is coming in next update. We have to wait if they are going to release it or not.
