WOW! 2021 Samsung S21/Note 21 to get even more expensive with Snapdragon 875/X60 modem.

I'd be bummed if they end the note series, but it's not so serious to me to where I'd feel forced to go to the fold series . This would just make me slow down on my phone buying and hold on to my note 20. Once it dies I'd just go back to the S series . Not a huge deal for me. *shrugs*.

Honestly, as someone that has the Note 20 Ultra and thinks it is an amazing device, I think that Samsung has little choice and competition has forced it into this decision. I know that some on this forum don't want to admit it as they understandably love their Notes, but the internal pen takes up room that Samsung can't afford to give up anymore. The competition (Apple) does not have to deal with that limitation and this year the competitive landscape has changed. Last year, Samsung had 5G and Apple didn't. Samsung wins. This year, Apple has 5G and it is not having to deal with the space consumed by a pen. Let's not forget-mmWave/UWB 5G consumes lots of space. mmWave/UWB antennas are separate devices and there are multiple in each phone. 5G generates a lot of heat and requires extra heat dissipation. Do you wonder why phones are larger this year? mmWave/UWB 5G. Have you seen the iPhone 12 Pro Max? It is the heaviest phone I have every tried and it does not have a pen inside. Apple can pack it with anything else that they want. The pen forces compromises that Samsung now can't afford to make. So, make the S21 Ultra pen compatible and pack it with goodies that will keep it competitive. There is only so much room inside and the Note 20 Ultra is already huge. Hard to just keep making it bigger. Proof in point. Why does the S20 Ultra have a 5000ma battery and the Note 20 a 4500 ma battery? No more room inside. Something had to give.

If you want to blame someone, blame carriers like Verizon. All of this mmWave/UWB support inside for a 5G feature that most will never see is costing you more for each device and 95% will never see it. mmWave/UWB requires a fiber run to every corner of every block to host a transmitter as it doesn't travel very far or penetrate walls very well. I live in the far Chicago suburbs and I will never see it. Perhaps some in downtown Chicago will, but not me. But I am paying for it with every mmWave/UWB phone I have owned (I am on my 3rd) and in space consumed for a technology that I will never benefit from. That is why the new 5G push for all the US carriers is for low and mid band 5G as the cost to implement mmWave/UWB over large areas is impossible to meet. But your Note 20, S20 (some models), OnePlus 8 5G models, the iPhone 12 series and on and on all carry this essentially useless technology which consumes room that could be used for other things. Enough to keep a pen? I don't know. But I know that every cell phone manufacturer is having to make room by adjusting battery size or reducing cameras included, etc. Apple has one additional benefit as they use the Qualcomm modem, but their own CPU. They can control power usage in ways that Samsung can't as they have to use the Qualcomm CPU chips which have been slow to compete. So Samsung is in a bind. They are not trying to ignore their loyal customers. I think they have run into a wall. Put the pen on the outside of the phone and the landscape becomes more competitive. It has been my opinion, but it is looking more that this is where Samsung is headed. I will keep my Note 20 Ultra. There isn't anything on the horizon that I see coming that entices me. I had, and returned the S20 Ultra. Didn't like it. I think the Note 20 Ultra is an amazing device. If I have to settle with it for a while, I don't think I will suffer.

But there is room for 5G and a pen, as the Note 20 proves. From an engineering standpoint, the only sacrifice the internal pen should necessitate is a slightly thicker device to compensate for the space the pen slot occupies. Make it just a hair thicker, and you get a 5000mah battery. Not that hard. To say the iPhone 12 doesn't have to deal with a pen, that's true - it also means it doesn't have a pen. To me it's a disappointing move from Samsung. Definitely opens the door for me to look outside of Samsung. Life goes on though. I'm not interested in the Fold line at this time.

The difference between 4500 and 5000 is insignificant for alot of people since quick charging or for those people who work in an office or from home these days. For those days that I need extra juice in the field or out and about there are alternatives. I've never bought a phone based on battery size.

Exactly!

I actually agree. I have and enjoy the Note 20 Ultra with the smaller battery. The S20 Ultra was not, to me, as enjoyable, larger battery or not. I am just pointing out that the choices are already being made.

I'm going to predict that in 2021 there will be a Note, but like the rumors say - just one version. So, no dumbed down version you say? Actually, I predict that the Note WILL be the dumbed down version and the premium version will be the new Galaxy Note Fold 3. :D

Disagree..... Not everyone wants a foldable device, especially at it's high price.

So they would go for the non foldable lower end Note and it'll be the last single pane Note they make. It let's Samsung end the Note line more gracefully by making it appear that the Note didn't go away but rather evolved to the Fold (especially if they incorporate a stylus port). It doesn't matter anyway since the end goal is that the Note is going away and people who don't want a folding phone will opt for the S series and those who want a phone that will hold a stylus will have to opt for a folding phone. Apparently the Fold 3 is supposed to have a screen that is more glass like (see it when I believe it) and if they could make it durable enough for a stylus.......

Also I have no idea what I'm talking about.

I hear you, but I will never make excuses for a Billion dollar company!! If they wanted to make it work they would've..

Have you folks seen the render of the supposed "Samsung Scroll". That's something that I think I can get behind. I was really awed by the Oppo concept of the scrolling screen and heard that LG was coming out with one next year. I think I would prefer that over a fold. Hmmm.

Yep. Not at least for another gen or two. But it looks like they are pushing the agenda.
They say they are getting rid of the Note so they can focus their efforts on The "Fold" line of phones and make that the Note replacement... not for me, thanks!!!

Right!! I am thinking of looking elsewhere if this happens.

The note was high priced for the day when it was first coming out. New technology is always higher priced when released. The fold will do the same when mass produced. Folding phone are coming IMO, until you use one as a daily driver most won't understand the benefit smaller phone that opens into bigger screen.

Oh, I remember when the note first came out.. People said not everyone wants big phones, and here we are today with big phones.

I completely agree... folding phones are the future. Unfortunately it's looking like it might be an expensive future, at least for awhile  But I do plan on picking up a folding phone in the next few years. I still think traditional slabs will be around for a long time to come though, but foldables are the next big thing.
