WTF is using my battery/keeping my phone awake!?!?

So I was having a bad battery drain issue after I got my One. Decided to relock and flash stock RUU. Completely stock system now.

80% lost in 14.5 hours with only half an hour of screen time. Funny thing is, the HTC battery stats don't seem to think the phone was awake much. My battery apps tell a different story - says it was kept awake for 8 hours, with the kernel to blame. Not an app doing it. Things were fixed initially after the reflash, and then went back to their old ways yesterday.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I have had the same problem for the last few days. I turned off the setting in location that allows Google Now to use gps and it solved it. But Google Now no longer fully works. I also have the S4 and had the same problem at the same time so I think it has something to do with Google.

See I have GPS turned off. Network location only. But the usual Google location services are all turned on. Can't be a Google thing if it's not happening to every phone...

Where is the specific setting that you changed?

No, it happens to a lot of phones.. Google Location Services are a nasty little wakelock generator... try a test where you uncheck GLS for a day and see what that gets you.

With it on, my trusty little Stellar goes to sleep as well as my cranky three year old. With it off,I lose all those telltale ticks in the awake line when my screen is off.

I use Llama and Secure Settings to toggle GLS... I just wish Google would let me tweak how often Now checks its location.

I still don't think it's a Google thing. Just looked at the stats on my Razr HD Maxx. Kernel use is 2.5%. It's 50% in the screenshots above. And my Maxx has every single location source and setting turned on, even satellite GPS, which has been off on my One. I'm blaming Sense.

Have you tried betterbatterystats? I've found it has better granularity than something like wakelock detector when it comes to picking out the actual function that is hitting your battery.

I used better battery stats to find my issue and found a wakelock that was location network locator that was causing my phones to drain. Turned GLS off and now I no longer have the wakelock showing up. Battery life has doubled for me.

I have seen BBS recommended but haven't pulled the trigger. I'll take a look if turning off GLS doesn't fix it. Although there's still clearly something deeper with the OS because that bug isn't present in every Android phone.

Did you also disable the "Location + Google Search" option, or just Location Services?

Just GLS in the main location settings....

BBS works nice, it is more specific... I have that installed and its my go-to because it shows the exact module whereas something like WD gives you the parent module. Like Steve31 says, the Network Location services (there are two that work in tandem) are one of the biggest sources of wakelocks. Google Now appears to be especially busy and calls for its location quite often, forcing your phone to wake up and stay awake.

Its nuts... I wish there was a more detailed way to control when and how GN checks its location... its pretty heavy handed. I mean, its a REALLY nice feature, but man, it's a battery pig at times.

sorry no solution, just sounding off--
its ridiculous that Android OS allows this.
On my phone Draw Something keeps the phone awake and will run down the battery in an hour, even if I make it sleep with the power button.
A dead battery at 10 in the morning is very annoying, and it can even be a matter of LIFE AND DEATH.
Google should not let this happen.

I hear you but... Google didn't create draw something nor install it on your phone. LIFE AND DEATH vs. Draw Something, I'm uninstalling Draw Something until the developer addresses the problem.

Google Now on the other hand is a Google problem. They should give users some more options to limit things like how often it wakes the phone. I use Google Now but I don't need it constantly checking my location by GPS.

I just disable Google Now entirely. I just do not use it.

Same here, the benefits of google now are not worth it when the battery drains from all of it's wakelocks. I have it off and google maps / search greenified.

Really? Iife and death? I mean I get it, but thats kind of overboard. Delete the came or close it out properly. "making it sleep with the power button" doesnt mean that, it means you turned the screen off and its running in the background.

Since you are rooted, get the app Greenify. It will tell you what's running in the background and what is waking the phone. For me, Facebook was waking the phone (not necessarily the screen) LITERALLY THOUSANDS OF TIMES. I do not misuse that word, I know what it means. In just a few hours it'd woken the phone 3000+ times.

Greenify lets you hibernate apps so they only run when you want. After hibernating a bunch of apps, I found my battery life doubled (and even with all this going on, I was getting about two days of use out of it.)

You can look into it here: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...greenify&feature=search_result&token=xbfamjBe..

I was having the same issue with my Note 4. These are supposed to be great on battery then I started snooping around it's settings and found WiFi Always on. This was due to an option called "Always allow scanning" this option was on and making my phone hot draining my battery super fast! Keeping it awake all the time. Well I just turned this option off and boom I get the battery life Samsung was notorious for. Now my Note 4 is happy and lasts me for days on one charge. Give this a try on your device and see if that solves your battery issue.

My Device
Samsung Galaxy Note 4
My ROM
CMRemix V7.5
OS 5.1.1

Settings, screen, prevent pocket dials, switch this off. This keeps the phone awake, even in flight mode.
