I need to buy a new smartphone and came across the Xiaomi model Redmi Note 11.

How will this ban affect support for Xiaomi products in the long run and is Redmi Note 11 going to receive Android 12?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums. As far as I know Xiaomi is not banned in the US. Where did you see that?

Hi,

Xiaomi had been put in some sort of blacklist by former north-american president Donald Trump.

There have been numerous news about this on the internet, and apparently Xiaomi has been removed from the blacklist now.

The problem is nobody seems to talk about this issue much, and you hardly see updates on the case on the internet.

Xiaomi was removed from that blacklist over a year ago and nothing has changed since then.

Here in the UK Xiaomi phones are really selling well. It's a shame that their presence is not very well known or appreciated in the States.

Check out the specs of the new Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5g and you will find it's approaching the flagship arena with a price tag of £339.

As an aside, I'm not sure the Canadians and Mexicans would appreciate that ****-head being called the "North American President" lol

I will have a look at the Redmi Note 11 Pro model too. But is there anything else out there better than the Redmi Note 11 (non-pro version) that is better bang-for-buck?

Also, I've personally never bought a product from Xiaomi before. How good are Xiaomi smartphones in terms of software support?

Usually I like to use a budget-intermediary smartphone for more than 4 years before I even consider dumping it straight to trash. My last smartphone was from Asus, the ZenFone 3 which lasted for over 6 years and I would've kept using it if it hadn't been for the goddamn integrated battery dying on me all of a sudden.

Xiaomi are still selling the Redmi Note 10 Pro for £219. I am typing this on my Note 10 Pro right now and it certainly is a remarkable device for the money.

They have a great Mi Community forum specific to your region where issues can be resolved.

Although I haven't had to use it, the Mi Store support team are noted to be very good in resolving issues and dealing with any warranty problems.

OP, what country are you in?

I write from Brazil. And thank you again for the feedback, it's much appreciated.

But how about updates? I hear Xiaomi isn't very good in terms of software updates. For example, some newer Samsung smartphones are promised to receive up to at least Android 16 which is far more than the "typical" 2 year update support Xiaomi publicly states on their official website.

So I'm kinda worried.

If you require OS updates for that length of time, then perhaps Samsung would be a better choice for you.

Yes, talking about OS updates, I have another question for you.

Like I know this is an Android forum and all, but what if I try and install a custom ROM after the phone stops receiving OS updates? Will I still be able to get the latest software and will it be secure?

I guess my question is, is there a way to circumvent this OS update issue? Maybe installing APKPure?

I am a noob when it comes to smartphones.

As far as Xiaomi phones are concerned, No, not recommended.

I live in Brazil as well and I understand how difficult is to choose the right phone here. Or you face the risks of importing a device or you have very limited options unless you spend a lot of money.

Yes, with most Xiaomi models you get quarterly updates for a couple of years. Compared with the usual brands brands here it's slightly better than Moto and much worse than Samsung.

There are some custom ROMs compatible with many Xiaomi devices but I'm not sure if you want to go that way with your main phone before you learn what you are doing and the risks involved.

If long term system updates are a must for you I'd recommend to look for a Samsung device. There are very good deals for different models, like the A52s and S20 FE (both with Snapdragon). Good value for the price.

You are brazilian too?

Most definitely a Samsung device would be the safer choice for me, but I'm willing to take the risk. I've had plenty of Samsung smartphones already, but never tried anything coming from China. Plus, both the A52 and S20FE are way above my budget for a smartphone, but thanks for the suggestions.

By risks involving custom ROMs you mean flashing the device specifically? Or is it something related to software? If so, I've already flashed an old tablet with a custom ROM because the official one was too slow for the device at the time lol, the procedure went fine thank god for that. But I still don't know exactly what a custom ROM has to offer besides a theoretical speed bump for being less bloated.

If I happen to find a custom ROM compatible with the Redmi Note 11 (global version), will it offer the possibility of installing the latest software and have better security Vs. having an outdated official Android OS version installed?

I'm Spanish but I've been living in the NE of Brazil for more than two decades.

I think you are a bit overthinking about long term updates. The Note 11 is a new device so you still have ahead at least 2 years of official support, with updates for Android 12 and probably 13. It's impossible to know how much custom ROM support there will be in the future for this device and you'll have plenty of time to prepare and decide which one could suit your needs best.

I saw that there are great deals for the entry model (~ R$ 1.200,00) and it's quite difficult to find a decent device for such a price. I think your only decision should be if you feel okay with the corners that were cut to offer that price (cameras, RAM management, average SoC for heavy processes ...) or not. That's all :)

So you are Spanish living in Brazil? That's kinda odd but alright.

This isn't overthinking. And what if it was? It's my choice my money. Things are very hard financially especially in Brazil where technology costs a hell of a lot more than it should and you know it.

I don't think it's difficult to find a decent device at this price range, but the concept of "decent" is also subjective. My previous Asus ZenFone 3 was great for my usage and only costed me ~R$1.300 at the time, though it was before the pandemic. I'm almost sure if it wasn't for the goddamn battery issue of my ZenFone 3, the Snapdragon 625 SoC would still last a couple more years no problem, the experience was butter-smooth. But Android was stuck at version 7 or 8, not sure. Thus my question about long-term software support.

If long term software support is your main criteria then go Samsung. If you want the best bang for your buck then go Xiaomi. You will still get at least 2 years of OS updates, maybe 3. At the end of the day it's down to YOU to make the final choice. We can only advise

I also live in the UK and have two high spec 2020 models.
I keep an eye on models and prices as Xiaomi's Mi and Poco apps do amazing one day or limited period deals.

All of which is little use to you but if you want to ask anything or check uk prices I can keep you abreast

What I would be a little concerned for you and curious about is the global support if Xiaomi does't have a presence in Brazil online.

I can't see how flashing a custom rom would make Xiaomi send more updates for devices they have finished supporting.

Xiaomi models now offer 4 years support but they don't officially offer long term support to Redmi, Mi and possibly Poco models - though they have kind of branched Poco off as a separate entity, but not really.

For the money I can get the Poco F3 with 256gb for less than most Redmi Note 11 models (£194 - 229)

What happens if you browse Mi.com in Brazil, or Xiaomi and Poco. Does Amazon sell direct from Xiaomi like they do here? (though I bought my two from Xiaomi)

Thanks. Good that you asked about Amazon, they are importing these products and offering only 3 months warranty which isn't good by any means. Apparently, Xiaomi has an official online store selling their products here in Brazil, but prices are not good either. Best prices are from Amazon still. I feel I really need the full-time warranty and support from Xiaomi because I don't trust these new 33W+ turbo chargers, battery may suffer.

About flashing a custom ROM, this is one of the main reasons I wanted to open a thread here as I haven't found any conclusive answers. In fact I have many questions about Android:

  1. What are the disadvantages of using an outdated Android version besides security?
  2. What are the advantages of using a custom ROM?
  3. Do custom ROMs offer better security compared to using an outdated Android version?
  4. Does anybody know the difference between Android OS updates Vs. Security patches in terms of security specifically?
I haven't been able to find answers to this on the web. So if any of you can contribute it would be much appreciated!
