Xoom--will Ipad 2 announcement have an effect?

Those are "apps" you are referring to....not exactly what the ipad does.

The Xoom will have all of those apps and many more in time.

Will the iPad2 ever have 4G capability? No
Customizable home screens, including live wallpapers? No
Widgets that allow me to see what is going on without opening an app? No
SD Card support? No
100% freedom from connecting to computer? No
Ability to download music/movies/media outside of iTunes, ie for free? No
Take pictures in low lighting via led flash? No
Go on websites that utilize flash? No

The list goes on and on.

Essentially there is NOTHING that the iPad can do which the Xoom can not, outside of talking about APPS. But APPS can be made for any product --- and with the popularity of Android growing, they will.
Fantastic post!!!

I have said this all along. On release day this tablet was ovwrpriced, but if it gets all the features we are promised then it will be worth the price.

It costs $70 more than an comparably equipped iPad 2, just how overpriced is that? It is not cheap, granted, but I would not call it overpriced. Also, for the comment about the iPad 2 being $300 cheaper...stop comparing the entry level iPad to the Xoom...Xoom is NOT an entry level device.

If those figures are true then 70% of the people who bought 3g I pads are total morons

Why pay more for it if you aren't going to use it? ??

They probably bought it because of the gps. It was only offered in the 3g models.

Plus I get 2x the ram, better screen resolution with more PPI. True widescreen format instead of a goofy square.

Except that apps, features, and functionality go hand in hand. I wish the iPad had widgets, but I love being able to watch netflix on the iPad while I work out. We don't know if/when that is coming. Right now there is more that can be accomplished on an iPad (2 as of next week) than on a xoom. By the end of the year it is very probable that android tablets will because capable and provide as good a user experience as the iPad but they aren't there yet and xoom isn't even a competitor, but that is based on my criteria. The xoom may be better for others but I think they will be in the minority. I actually see many consumers going with a bi-os model, an android phone and iPad or vice versa.

Sure the xoom is an entry level device, where's the other models if it isn't. And if it isn't an entry model device, do you really think Moto just wants to sell a few tens of thousands to hardcore geeks and not average consumers? Moto wants a share of the tablet market and they put out a product which they thought many people would feel was superior to the market leader, same as with the og droid. Problem is that this time it wasn't superior like the droid was and it will have only been on the market for 2 weeks before they really lose sales.

I have to disagree with you, sorry. The specs tell you it isn't an entry level device, particularly when it is only comparable to the high end iPad. Did Moto make a mistake by only creating one high end device? Yes. In order for them to properly compete they needed other models available at launch. They just focused on creating a high spec device with the assumption that it would sell better than the competition.

Sure the xoom is an entry level device,
you sound like you don't understand what entry level device means?

There will not be an Android tablet priced higher or have better build than the Xoom, making the Xoom the premium release, not entry level. Moto just chose to release the premium version first to suck as much cash from the early adopters as possible. Entry level does not mean first to market, it means easiest to get access to(lower prices, lower quality, fewer features, for instance lack of 3G/4G in wifi only version)

I wish the best for Moto but it is an uphill battle for them and releasing without key features is not going to make it any easier. I hate apple with a passion, and I mean HATE! But even I would buy a lower priced ipad over the xoom, but to be honest I would rather have a more useful laptop. I tablet is not needed for me and is more of a luxury.

You guys make a good argument from a enthusiast view but in the real world the average consumer doesn't really care. Price and functionality play a huge role.

Also the fact that the XOOM cannot be reduced in price unless manufacturer cost go down and they break even or Google subsides the tablet. You have to remember Apple makes a small margin on each tablet after R&D + Manufacturer cost but the real profit comes from the apps. While Motorola's only profit is from the sell of the tablet unless Google is going to step it up and subsided the XOOM, there is no way the XOOM will succeed against the iPad. I'm guessing the XOOM will hit with mediocre sales until the 2nd generation comes out.

The other thing I wonder about is apps made for the xoom. I know apple apps will work with the IPAD. But will developers make stuff for honeycomb specifically? If I wanted to make some money and I was a developer I know I'd make stuff for the IPAD. Sure the freedom of android is nice, but its not going to show me the money. What are everyone else's thoughts on this?

Take a look at this poll. I had posted it earlier...it still shows the Xoom ahead of iPad 2.

There is already commitment from several companies based on what was shown in the show in Barcelona, so I'd say that developers will make the apps. Remember this device has only been out for days. Even the iPad did not have a significant number of apps that were tablet-specific at launch.

sorry but that is a BS poll, the xoom/other honeycomb tablet is not ahead by much and how many of those votes are not even for the xoom. That poll looks like it was setup to make the xoom the winner by adding other tablets in the selection with it

I'm sorry but how many other Honeycomb tablets are there in the marketplace right now? Last I checked, it is just the Xoom.

I realize that it may not be perfect poll but I still find the trend interesting and it has been running most of the day.

if it is just the xoom then why did they put that in there? My vote wouldnt be for the xoom but another HC tablet and from what I have read on here I have seen several other people say they are going to wait and see what else comes out, that could sway the xoom vote is all I am saying, nothing else has other tablets added with them, why does the xoom?

no disrespect intended to the creator of it just noting it is flawed

+1. The words "Another Honeycomb" imo does skew the polling results. Those two little words also includes upcoming HC tablets like the Lg Optimus/Slate, Samsung Galaxy Tab, and other possible manufacturers.

There are so many reasons that poll is wrong... There really is no point in arguing on the forums, fanboys will be fanboys. I'm just pointing out the facts, look at the financial statement and stocks of apple compared to Motorola. You'll see which one is more successful.

You're right, of course. Fanboys will change the topic of conversation to things like company financials, it's one vs many, arguments, etc.

It seems to me like apple took everyone surprised by releasing the ipad so soon after announcement. Motorola's strategy with the xoom was probably that it would have a couple of months before the ipad would drop. At which point, they would have the money of the early adopters, could drop the price and bring in the wifi version to have $600 wifi/ $730 3g/4g versions that would stack up really well against the ipad.

I also can't help but think that the delay in adobe's new version of flash and google's late release of honeycomb really hampered the xoom's release.
