Ya Know... I'm so happy that I bought the 6p and didn't buy the Note 7.

I foresee the largest all time screw up with the Note 7 recall for the mobile world.

I really feel sorry for all of the people who bought one of them, and do wish them a speedy resolution of their predicament, but also know that it isn't going to be painless..

Which brings me to the point of buying this last Nexus brand phone... And why I am happy about it.

Yes it has last year's technology in it.

No it isn't going to be made anymore..

No it doesn't have all the new features or come with a spen

But it is rock solid dependable phone... One that had been out for some time, and that's where I am going with this...

I have a few friends who elected to upgrade to the new note 7 and a few of them kinda laughed at my choosing to buy the 6p. I had told them that if I were them that I would give it a month or two just to see if the phone developed any issues but they were sucked in by the freebies and the statements of best phone ever....

It's reminded of the old story of the hare and the tourtise in a way...

I really feel sorry for all of the people who bought one of them.. because of all the grief they are going to have, maybe these friends of mine will heed my advice next time..

Glad you enjoy your phone. It does suck about the Note 7 but to be honest this can happen to anyone if corners are cut. It does suck but hard to predict the future on if / when this will happen. The key thing is the company taking card of the customers.

Sure.. Samsung doesn't really have a choice but to cover their own on this..

Sure it can happen to any oem on phones.. but the moral of the the story is I chose to wait, research and see how good a phone is before jumping on a brand new unproven device.

I made that mistake 1 time, and it was a lesson that I kept in mind before going with this phone.. I just refuse to let the perks and payed reviews sway me anymore.

Funny thing happened to me. I switched to the Note7. I sold my S7 Edge and sold my 2nd hand Nexus 6P (128GB) that I had gotten for $420, after resolving my performance issues with the Note.

The buyer of the Nexus 6P had 2nd thoughts and returned it. I got it back, decided to return the Note7 a day before the recall, and just keep the Nexus, because its app switching with Nougat is still a lot quicker. But my screen won't change orientation on the Nexus any more.

Researching this issue, I learned that Huawei/Google are not sure what is causing it but covering it under warranty.

So I will have a refurbished Nexus 6P 128GB next Tuesday for $420 plus a few PayPal costs. Overall I scored.

Wow.. Talk about perfect timing..

Re: Ya Know... I'm so happy that I bought the 6p.

I've had my 6P since June and zero regrets. I recently got a 6S for work, meh...I am still preferring my 6P over iOS (imagining the 6S screen as big as my 6P). Best phone I've ever owned, sure it's a little big but it'd perfect for me.

And .. I am glad they're choosing to cover their "own". It is hard to knock a company for actually doing the right thing. Like them or not it is good for them to come out and fix it.

I'm sure you can look at it that way, but exactly why should they be praised for doing the right thing when they didn't have a choice? Sure they owned up to it..

They chose to use the outsourced components do to the demand without QC standards. This was a business decision.. where they put profit above safety.... and look at the spin they are spinning now about it.

For the record I have always liked their phones and have had 3 of the Note series 1,2&5, the Captivate, S3, s6, s6active, s7edge... Not to mention several thousands of dollars in their appliances in my home..... So I am not anti Samsung by any means.. But I am not going to give them a free pass and not hold their feet to the fire they have caused on this.. I would do the same to any other manufacturer.

I chose the 6p because it has a proven track record.. The Note 7's track record is forever stained as well as Samsung's reputation for causing this.

Personally.. If the Note 7 had come out with a flat screen there would have been a whole bunch more people in the same boat, and quite possibly 1 or 2 in my family.. I am thankful that they didn't get one.

My good wife says "Everything for a reason" my hope is that Samsung has learned it's lesson well this time around so that they really do put consumer safety first and foremost, instead of just a PR statement....

I agree with you to an extent, but your argument about them choosing to outsource their batteries is not a good one. The QC part of it, yes. But every single phone manufacturer out there outsources components of their phones to multiple vendors.

Almost every AMOLED screen and phone RAM module out there regardless of phone is made by Samsung. Even Apple outsources their screens, CPUs, etc. That's not the issue. The issue is the 2nd one you raised about QC. With something as critical as the battery, they should have done more QC on it. Even if its entirely possible that they wouldn't have picked this up with more QC. We're talking about an issue that's occurring in about 30 phones out of 1m+.

They could have put the onus on the customer to look up their serial number, take it to an authorized repair center and have it repaired. That's how most recalls I've seen have gone. They could have also waited for regulatory bodies to force them to act. What they're actually doing is much more customer friendly and at huge expense to themselves.

Here's the problem..

QC standards have to not only improve but to be used.. Samsung didn't do this and is trying to spin it as a low number.

Samsung has been here before with these issues with their batteries.. People forget this fact in their rush to praise Samsung for doing the "Right' thing... They sure as heck didn't issue a global recall then because there were just a few bad batteries..

This time around it's a whole different story...

I'm sorry but if these numbers are so insignificant why the global recall..???

The feds aren't involved in this yet, so we have to go by Samsung's story of just how many bad batteries are involved, but I know this... If those numbers were actually as small as they are spinning it.. They wouldn't be spending millions of dollars doing this..

I know you are trying to find the silver lining in all of this, but that ain't how big business works... and believing PR damage control spin without questioning it is not something I can do..

Samsung's back is up against a wall here.. And they are doing what they do best... PR... and hoping to get their fans behind them who swallow everything they put out..

If all of the phones are shipped back to them, how do you know that they are telling you the truth? You won't.. That's the thing..

Common sense tells me that the number of bad batteries are higher than what is being passed on to us.. Otherwise they wouldn't have taken such drastic measures to get them taken out of service. They will get bulk of them back, without any verification of the real number of bad ones..and no one is the wiser. They'll take a small hit on their stock and fire a few people and then go right ahead with business as usual...

What I want to know is what Company made these and what other manufacturers are using them.. IF SAMSUNG REALLY PUT THE CUSTOMER SAFETY FIRST then they would be telling the world this..

I agree fully with this and have asked that in a couple of threads. Are any other devices at risk for the same issue? Other issues from the same vendors? No one seems to know.

And if they aren't forced to answer... We never will...

Re: Ya Know... I'm so happy that I bought the 6p.

Things like this can happen to anyone. But yes, it's best to wait a bit before taking the dive. Plenty of phones in the past have had some issues.

Re: Ya Know... I'm so happy that I bought the 6p.

But my screen won't change orientation on the Nexus any more.

I ran across a post somewhere, it might have been Reddit, not sure. But some dude had details on the orientation chips Huawei used. One of them has a component with two opposing leads that has fingers that alternated... They detected movement. He said that this design has a tendency to run into fabrication issues where the fingers end up with extremely small burrs... Which cause fingers to sometimes bind... If they do, the sensor can no longer detect any movement.

All it took was a good whack... Just pop that thing against your hand a few times and the fingers would free up.

Funny thing... A few weeks after I came across that, mine froze up. I remembered the post.. whacked it a couple of times and it's been working perfectly ever since.

So .. Them doing the right thing is a must but if they didn't you would get mad at them for not? So damned if they do damned if they don't? Seems like there is no win for them in this situation you created.

While there might be some aspects to this recall that probably could be handled better (like involving the CPSC), Samsung should be lauded for the speed and decisiveness. They didn't let it fester, or refuse to acknowledge it for weeks until they were ready to officially announce... They issued a statement that they were aware of a problem and investigating it almost as soon as we saw reports coming in.

And they took action quickly. The problem is that they don't control the entire supply chain, so dealing with a million moving parts there is going to be a pain.

So yes, if they had done nothing at all to address the issue... But they didn't, and they went to great lengths as well.

Hmm... Let's see...

Samsung causes this and I am supposed to praise them for trying to correct their mistakes?

Samsung put profit above safety by rushing these into the market by not fully testing them... And I am supposed to thank them for recalling them?

If Samsung really cared about it's customers safety.. These batteries and what ever else is wrong with the phone to cause them to explode and catch fire would never have been shipped out.. They should have continue the delay and fully vetted the phone... They didn't do this... They rushed these phones out to meet shipping demands...

Let's try this... Let's acknowledge that they are doing the right thing.... And leave it at that.

So glad you like your Nexus! In my opinion, it is never a wrong decision to go with a Nexus.
