Yahoo mail suddenly quit working; "Invalid credentials" error

I just got a Droid 4 this week. I used the stock e-mail app to set up my account and Yahoo mail loaded right up. I used the stock app on my Samsung Stratosphere and never had an issue, so I went for it on the Droid 4.

However, today, it won't sync or download for some reason, and I don't know why. I went into account settings and tried to delete the account, figuring I'd install it with some manual settings I have found on the Internet, and yet all I get is a "Invalid credentials" error. I even tried turning off the mobile data and turning it back on. The phone has been turned on and off, too. No luck. Basically, it's like the Yahoo mail account is in limbo, I can't access it, but it won't let me delete it either.

Any suggestions on what to do? Please note that I am not here for the "Use _____ app instead" opinions. I am aware I have those options. Instead, I'm trying to fix the problem I have because I am one of those people that when something is broke, I like to see what I can do to fix it, and "sweeping it under the rug and using something else" is not a valid option for me. Thank you in advance for that understanding.

Hey Moo Cow; I hate to be a "me too" poster, but I think it's important for you to know you're not alone. For the past few days (at least 2) none of my android devices is able to receive mail from Yahoo. I've got an Incredible as well as a Galaxy Tab and neither is able to log in to my Yahoo mail account. I don't think I'm getting a "invalid credentials" error, just a "log in failed" message. Probably the same thing. Like you, I tried going into my setup and verified everything to no avail. Meanwhile, I did log on via my laptop and checked my account activity in case someone had hacked it (had that happen before). But this time everything shows up normal. So I'm thinking there's some Yahoo/Android issue. I haven't tried othe mail software (such as K9) yet to see if that works.

Marc,

I still cannot get things working right. I've downloaded the Yahoo Mail app in the meantime and have absolutely no issues with it. Still, the problem solver in me wants the issue fixed so I can rest easier.

You may be right on the Y/A issue. Hopefully it is fixed soon.

I just couldn't bring myself to download the Yahoo app... I don't want to be held prisoner to their software when it's unecessary. Surprisingly, my emails started flowing yesterday afternoon with no intervention on my part. Both my Inc and my Tab started receiving emails. I haven't checked this morning to see if they're up to date, but in my mind this is further proof the problem is NOT in our devices. One minute mine would say "login failed" and later on the emails started arriving..... I had downloaded and tried to set up K9 software but when I encountered the same login problems I uninstalled it. Like you, I'd rather get to the bottom of the problem. Weird!

The Yahoo app isn't bad for me. But I agree, why should it have to be my main app when I don't need it to be? I used to be a BlackBerry user up until last November, and the Samsung Stratosphere is I started with in November when I went to Android, and both had reliable native e-mail clients. This one on the D4 has issues and I just want them fixed.

I check every other day to see if the native D4 email app lets me either access Yahoo OR let me delete the account. Neither can happen. So it's rinse/repeat every other day.

I recall at one point the mail app had threading issues if there were more than one account on it. I'm having the issue now, but I can't seem to delete my gmail account. probably tied to the phone I suppose.

The "Invalid Credentials" error is a Droid issue, not a Yahoo! issue. For me, it's happening with both Yahoo! and Gmail. If you find a fix, please keep us posted.

Side note: I downloaded the Yahoo! and Gmail apps just so I could access email on my phone. The Yahoo! app sucks the life out of my battery.

hi Moo Cow & marcjac,

thanks for the inputs about your yahoo email dilemma. and i'm one of you guys too that had the same yahoo email updating problem on an android ics phone.

i consider Not to get the Yahoo app for it...
coz coming from an iphone user, this should work properly without any fuzz, but somehow it doesn't.

i hope some experts can reply here soon.

many thanks
BR & God bless

same prob here, no luck with partition wipe. think schoolfeed and preloaded facebook app may have caused an issue, I hate that app and it's a pain to delete. called motorola and factory reset was only suggested. so, 3months of owning phone I've had several probs like this, I actually miss my blackberry, I had it for years and never had any issues..especially security issues. wish blackberry would make a nice touchscreen and become more competitve in smartphone market, they almost never had security issues.

FIXED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have been able to fix this problem by making sure that I am logged out of my email account on my PC. When I login through the browser on my android, then logout, it does not work. If I get the "Invalid Login Credentials" error, I can fix the error by opening yahoo mail on a regular PC then logging out of the email account.

Let me know if this doesn't work for you but it solved the problem with all three of my yahoo email accounts and the standard droid email app.

Hmm...this solution didn't work for me. I still can't get credentials to work on my new Sprint Galaxy s4. I'll sit on it for a few days and then try again I guess.

Forgot about this thread. The issue did get resolved when I got the JB update. I was finally able to delete the accounts.
