YES!! There is a car dock with built in charging!

However, there is a major problem still. Hit the home button and you go to the launcher, not the car dock app. I'm very disappointed, but I have something that will work. I still miss the Car Home on the RAZR.

Also, just a FYI that the home button issue is by design by Google starting with Android 4.2, https://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=39662 (look at post #100).

I did find this potential work around on XDA forums, requires two downloads, can't hurt to try Roms, Windows, upgrading, info help? - xda-developers
Let us know if you try it and it works.

I'd really be interested in hearing a report back on the owlpad. I haven't seen these before but I've very intrigued.

Thanks for the links. I'll look at the downloads tonight. Also, I'm very glad to see the outrage of other users. I hate to feel like I'm a single ranting madman :-)

Btw, I rigged the dock to work temporarily until I get a better mounting solution. The phone shifts in the dock every time I touch it. I'm not happy with the design.

I am in the car a couple hours a day, so I am waiting for you to find a solution for me to copy. Keep us posted.

will do. I'll try the suggestions tomorrow on my drive. Still looking for a better mounting solution for this dock. I think I'll stay with this dock for now. I might try another docking solution later if I can't get past the way it wiggles in the dock when I adjust it.

As for the suction mount, I am using it until I get a better ball mount. I can tell you that the range of motion is more limited on this ball than any ball mount I have ever used.

I will say this though. I drive a couple of hours, and it looks like in the dock charging may be all the charging I need during the day. I'm thinking I might just get one Qi charger for the house, and not worry about it at work. I'm at 94% right now. I'm still plugging in the phone while I sleep. So the drive in to work keeps me topped off. I was at 71% at the end of my work day. I will also say I am using an app called Beat the Traffic that is running the GPS all day and draining my battery more than my screen time, which wasn't as much as usual today. Anyway, I'll be watching the trend over the next week to see how I feel.

On an unrelated but funny note, I had a surprise waiting for me in my car today. I was confused when I got in the car. My console by the shifter had standing liquid in it. I looked up and there were splash marks everywhere. Then it hit me. Oh crap, I grabbed a Cherry Vanilla Dr Pepper this morning and forgot to drink it. Triple digit temps made that Dr Pepper can explode and bounce around my car like a rocket. I really love my Dodge Charger and I try to keep it nice, but I was laughing so hard I couldn't start the car for a minute. The ceiling is a light color, not what I wanted. I scrubbed hard with Oxyclean. I'll get an upholstery cleaner on it next. Oh well, at least it didn't happen when it was new.

I rarely drink soft drinks in the morning, but I just had the urge today. Dropped the kids off at school, and forgot about it on the way in. I guess the urge wasn't that great after all. Both of my kids wanted to know what happened when I picked them up. The cherry made it look like someone had been brutally murdered.

The soda story is funny, but that really sucks too!

Charging is finally the least of my concerns, as much as anything I want the phone in a secure place for my drive. Being able to use it some for maps and traffic is a bonus.

OK, I first tried to pull the APK of the SmartCarDock off of my RAZR and load it on the Maxx. The Car Dock app on the RAZR was really great. I got the APK and dropboxed it to my Maxx, but it would not install. After working with it for a while, I downloaded the Google Car Home APKs from the link in the previous post by opuntia2. Here it is again [APP] Google Car Home 2.2.1.4 - xda-developers and thank you optunia2.

Install the 8-2.2 file first, then the 18-2.2.1.4 file second. Worked like a charm.

Still looking for a solution to the home button issue. Google must hate people that drive.

Seriously though, focus groups. Focus groups can help you make better decisions. Otherwise you end up with an Android phone that wants to kill you in traffic, or a German company with an MP3 player in America call i.Beat Blaxx (really, I can't make this stuff up).

I'm hoping Google will get it that people are pissed. I really don't get the backward thinking.

I hope to order my dash mounting solution for the dock this weekend. I haven't found exactly what I'm looking for yet, but I found something that might work if I can't find anything else. It is a .56" (14.224mm) ball, which is a little smaller than I need. It is also not on an AMPs plate, but I can work around that.

According to Griffin, the ball is 14.7mm (.5787"). The CSR said he'd pass on my suggestion to use 17mm in the future. I hope he does, and I hope they listen.

If this does not work out to be somewhat acceptable, I'm going to look into the Owlpad, or God help me some other generic mount.

I'll post an update with pictures after I get it mounted, or not.

I'm glad that you got that working, that's one of the best things about Android...if you can't get something to work, somebody's usually figured out a work around.

Looking back at my last post I realized that I gave you the wrong link that details how to repair the home button issue, maybe you can be the guinea pig and try this too [MOD][Xposed] Restore Car Dock mode on Android 4.2 - xda-developers

I'm going to wait and see if proclip comes out with a mount for either the Maxx or the Moto X. I sent an email but I haven't heard back yet. My setup will be this for my Mazda CX-5 KUDA OEM leather iPhone GPS Mount for MAZDA CX-5 (since 2012) black and use that to install the proclip on if and when it comes out.

Yeah, I'll check out the link.

That mounting solution looks good. It's positioned better than mine, and doesn't look like it gets in the way of the console.

If you are getting a Droid MAXX that has wireless charging perhaps you might try this mount. You can add an LG WCP-300 to it to get wireless charging. If you have Bluetooth you can be completely wireless. Too bad Moto X doesn't have wireless charging. Not sure why they left this out.

Thanks for the suggestion. Pretty nice setup and design, but I'm apprehensive about using the wireless charger in the car. I've read in a few different places where the wireless charger isn't able to provide enough juice to charge the phone if for example the phone happens to be running GPS and music at the same time, which in turn causes the phone to overheat. Have you tried it?

Not yet I'm waiting to upgrade to a Note 3 to get a phone with wireless charging. I'm hoping to be wire free with that and Bluetooth. I wish they made one with magnets rather than arms to hold it. Would be even better. I hadn't seen that it didn't provide enough current. I'll have to do some research on that.

Looks like from this page it puts out 1000 mA.
GoodDigitalshop | LG WCP-300 White Wireless Battery Charger Pad for Optimus G Pro Nexus4 Galaxy S4
For my Galaxy Nexus that would just hold a charge to keep up with Podcasts and Navigation but gain charge very slowly. I found a 2.1 A charger would increase charge at an acceptable rate while listening to Podcasts and Navigating. I haven't found docks with integrated USB chargers very good. It tends to be difficult to line up the micro USB plug and if you find a dedicated dock for a specific phone where the shape helps line it up usually you have to take it out of the case. With wireless charging you can leave it in the case. The other solution I was considering is to manually plug in the phone with a USB wire but then using this dock to mount it:

Again I wish there was a wireless charging version of this magnetic dock that could provide higher currents.

It didn't work for me. According to the forum it looks like Motorola removed the startDockOrHome() method. Damn them. Sill researching. I really don't understand this. Fine, change things, but don't cripple functionality that users want to keep.

I'm manually launching the dock app now when I exit an app to the home screen. The workaround is to use the back button and ignore home. It stays in the dock app no matter how much you press back. This works for Google car home and inDrive. Getting closer.

Still waiting on a better mounting solution. I didn't get the ball mount ordered. I will tonight. The LG mount looks good, but I think it will press the volume buttons if positioned to charge properly. I'm also doubtful it will put the phone in car mode. I'll look closer at it.

I use CarHomeUltra. You can set it to start when it detects your cars Bluetooth and close when disconnects. There is also a companion app that allows you to go to it rather than home page when hit home button. It isn't perfect though because it causes you to not page to the center home page when not in car mode. Not perfect but livable. Not sure why Google disabled car mode.

Well I've taken the plunge and ordered a griffin car cradle as well. Hopefuly it's better than my current cradle, the passenger seat. If anybody is thinking of getting one use "PACIFICRIM" coupon for 20% off at Store | Griffin Technology. Puts the cradle at $31 which also qualifies for free shipping.

That one did not work for me but this one does (REALPROOF2013) 20% off.

Thanks for the coupon code tip. My Maxx is shipping to me today and I need a dock to mount and charge.

I am coming from a Droid Razr Maxx HD and I too am really upset that Motorola stopped making custom accessories for their devices. They really made a superior product and tied it in with the dock mode and the combo audio cable...which for now I don't know what to do...upgrade my car stereo to bluetooth? Really upset about this one and seems to be the only regret of upgrading.

I've stuck with Moto for so long because they have a complete and well designed product line. It's unfortunate that they couldn't make a financial case to continue with their dock accessories line.

I'm thinking BT audio as well. It's a real shame that going from the original Droid RAZR to the Droid Maxx means I have to take a step back in how I use my phone in the car.

I've been looking at 3D printers. I've wanted one for a while. I'm thinking my next phone may be the excuse I need to buy one. A couple of years will be plenty of time to mature 3D printing and make it more affordable. I was thinking I could print out a dock with a cutout for a Qi charger in exactly the right spot, an NFC tag to put it in car mode, and put a 17mm ball compatible mount on it. If I had the disposable cash to do it right now, I would. Or maybe some enterprising person will do it first and sell printed docks. I think we're going to be able to order all kinds of custom printed parts in the near future.

OK, I'm resurrecting this thread as I have finally set up my solution for car mounting.

To recap, I had a Droid RAZR with the Motorola dock that used the same 17mm ball that almost everything else uses. Griffin decided 14.7mm was the way to go. So, after a lot of searching, I found that the RAM Mount ball size A is the closest ball to what I need. It is 14.22mm (.56"), which is slightly smaller than needed. Also, I could not find this on an AMPs plate. As you can see from the first picture I have two AMPs mounts in my car. The top shows the hole pattern, and the bottom has a 17mm ball mounted to it. I temporarily used the adhesive disk on the top mount while I waited on the ball.

Here is a close up of the diamond mount on the AMPs mount. Two of the holes lined up. So, I'm happy. I had asked the question to GPS city, but somehow I missed the reply. They confirmed it is a diagonal AMPs hole patter.

DSC_5942 (Small).JPG

Here is the back of the mount with plastic inserted to fill up the gap.

DSC_5952 (Small).JPG

Here is the Griffin mount installed on the ball. As a temporary solution, I put some plastic from a store bag in the cup on the mount to fill in the space created by the smaller ball. I read on the site I bought the ball from that someone used liquid plastic to make the ball larger. If the temporary solution doesn't hold, I'll do the same. I usually use my phone vertically as shown here. As you can see, I've chosen indrive as my car dock app. It is the default and it launches as soon as I put the phone in the dock. The home button solution in posts above did not work. Home still take me back to the launcher. So, I've gotten used to hitting back instead of home.

Here it is horizontally, allowing access to the bottom mount.

DSC_5960 (Small).JPG

And here is the full solution with the GPS mounted as well.
DSC_5976 (Small).JPG

This solution does not interfere with the passenger much even though it looks like it does. I haven't done any cable management yet either. It also gives the passenger access to control my devices while I drive, which is nice on long trips when I want them to check something for me. The smaller ball is not as tight as the original, but it holds the dock securely enough. After going through this, I'll NEVER get another dock that does not use a 17mm ball.

Here is the link to the ball. RAM Mount Diamond Plate with A-Ball RAM-A-238U

I held off on ordering it for a while longer than planned because I really wanted a better solution. I got tired and ordered it anyway. I could not find anything else that was close enough to work.

In case you are wondering the mounts are Panavise vehicle specific mounts. Just Google "Panavise vehicle specific mount *Your car model here*" and you'll likely find it. It is designed to be used as a single mount. It uses the screws that hold your radio to secure it. I bought two and shifted one up and one down. So, they are less secure than intended, but considering this is the third cell phone I've mounted, It isn't a problem. The bottom one is a bit off because it was where my other two cells were mounted, and has had the most use. I decided to try out mounting this one on top to see if I like it better. I might move it down later. One last thing, if you want to do this, get METAL balls. I originally bought plastic balls, and the stems on both broke. I replaced them with metal, and have had no issues since.
