You WILL lose root by doing 2.2 Update

Hopefully tomorrow we can keep the "OMG I lost root access by doing the update" threads to a minimum. Do some research before hand. Don't make it harder on mods to merge and delete threads. If you want to keep root then wait a bit. The devs over at xda are ready to get their hands on the update and push out rooted versions asap.

If someone knows how to root their phone, I pretty sure they know updating to 2.2 will remove their root

You'd be surprised :p

There are lots of threads being started in the 'hacking' section... all asking 'will i lose root if I do the update'.

I'm sure it will be a repeat of the last OTA (1.47) where tons of people updated without thinking twice, then flooded the forums with the same 'how can I get root back' question.

So if I do the update on my Wife's will I lose root on mine? :)
LOL that's my question!:p

Actually I am going to get the best of both worlds. My phone is rooted and will stay that way until they figure root out for 2.2, but since my wife's EVO is not rooted, I will be updating hers and getting me some froyo goodness!!

That's exactly what I'm doing. I need my WiFi tether.

You guys sound just as bad if not worse then iPhone users saying they need a jailbreak. IPhone users want to jailbreak there iphones to use services and have apps we get out the box. But the Only 2 reasons I see people rooting there phones is only to remove the 30fps cap, (understandable) but Sprints Froyo could fix that, and free WiFi hotspot, (pure greed). It's just sad how rooting your phone is only based on using good services that you don't wanna pay for. If could get 4g in my appt I would deff pay the $30 hotspot feature.

I've rooted my phone and tested the tethering ONCE. I enjoy the FPS fix, but most importantly I like the speed and stability of the roms and customization of many of the themes I've downloaded.

Not everyone who rooted is trying to be "greedy".

I rooted my Pre out of necessity. Fortunately, I have not found it necessary to root my Evo, so this will be a moot point for me. For others, I'm sure root will come within 24 hours.

First off, there are other reasons to root as well, but to address this, Sprint is being greedy too. They have WiFi on the EVO so since I'm at home right now using WiFi and getting data from my fios service greedy old sprint is getting a break.

But I admit, I am greedy. There are guys that come to my door and want to now my yard for a fee, but being greedy I do it myself. Sure,it takes a little more work but I do it and save a buck. Same deal when the pool needs cleaned or the truck needs worked on. I do the work and get it done myself.

Sprint offers the WiFi hot spot. I do it myself with wireless teather. It takes a little more work, may have to put off an update for a few days I could pay the $30 a mint and it would be easy, but being greedy, I don't.

On the other hand, I buy Windows instead of Linux and Office instead of Open Office so sometimes I do pay for software when similar free options are available.

I know I'll lose root if I update on the 3rd and I'm not upset by it. I only decided to root my phone to install a custom ROM which gave my menus and such a new look, nothing ground breaking. I don't mind losing the new look at all.

agreed...i mean i rooted and unrooted just because i didnt really see a need for it...plus i have to return my phone eventually. i get free hotspot ANYWAYS...the only thing i wanted to use maybe flash CN6 and use screen grabber or TI backup...thats about it.

better battery, custom looks, get rid of sprint software, os working faster/smoother...so there is more than 2 reasons to root, those might be the 2 reasons you thought of, and if you wire tether witch you are allowed to then turn your laptop into an adhoc network, and share the phones internet that way, would that be wrong, since you have played within the rules

From unrevoked twitter:

Warning: this Froyo OTA for EVO will wipe out your ENG hboot as well.

Is there anyway to kill an OTA, what if I don't want Froyo? I killed the OTA on my palm and it was nice not having to deal with the damn updates and un-rooting/re-installing everything. I am a recent convert to the EVO, can someone point me to the Froyo features?
