I use Tasker, and swear by it. A lot of my tasks are by time, but I do have others based on state, location, or actions.

my car profile activates when my BT connects to my car. When that happens, gps is turned on, app menus pop up and texts get an auto response about how im driving and will text back later.

If I text SOS! to my phone, it sends a gps location, turns on music full blast, and has a screen prompt with contact info

At night, my alarm launches based on being plugged in and in landscape.

Thats a small sample, I have about 50 different tasks set up

I like your use cases for Tasker. Mind sharing some more of your specific uses?

I love tasker. When I put my phone in the car dock the car home UI automatically launches (Motorola feature for car dock). I have a profile which car home UI triggers Bluetooth on, iheartradio launches, and media volume adjusts to where I like it. Also use cell tower ID to turn wifi radio on and off and because your phone always knows it's current tower ID, it doesn't use battery like a GPS polling option would. Speaking of GPS I keep it disabled but have tasker enable it when I launch specific apps like navigation or G+, then disable when I exit.

I don't even scratch the surface of tasker functionality compared to some (I have a friend that would blow your mind) but for my minimal usage it's well worth the cost.

EDIT- forgot a couple. Have a couple profiles like auto send a text to my mom on her bday and such. Also, and this is cool, when I send a specific phrase to my phone from any number, via text, my phone send it's GPS coordinates including a link to google maps showing its location. Cool if I ever lost my phone. Turning the phone glass down puts it in vibrate mode, good for meetings. Tasker is not for the weak and frustrating to learn but awesome once you get the hang.

For those wondering where you can get the NFC tags, I ordered mine from www.tagsfordroid.com, I got 10 for $15.99, shipping included, also they throw in a free NFC keyring fob. I recieved it in about 3-4 days from when I ordered, and they look fine. I don't have an NFC device yet, so I can't say if they actually work, though I expect they will.

You can get 15 for $14.25 here tagstand - NFC Hobbyist Starter Kit - (15 Stickers)

And Tasker sounds great too. Seems like I'll be using both. I like Tasker mainly for the texting and find my phone through sms. Those seems really helpful. For the Tectiles I might set one on the washer, dryer, oven, coffee pot, toaster, grill or anything else that I could set to notify myself that it is done. I am very forgetful, lol.

One in my car for bluetooth, car mode, and other stuff. And the others... well i dont know ill see what happens

When I originally read about the textiles, I could swear it said you must tap the back of your phone to the textiles.

Just Flash It !!!

If they're like any other NFC tag (I believe they are, just Samsung is calling them textiles) then yes, the device must be against it for it to initiate.

I use Setting Profiles (similar to Tasker) so here's some I have set up:

Phone is silent from 10:30pm to 6:30am, unless my parents, my wife, or my boss calls, or if I get an email from one of our servers at work (indicating a backup failed or the server is down)

Phone is silent if my calendar indicates I'm in a meeting

Phone is silent if I'm at one of the 5 movie theaters I frequent

My work schedule is eratic, so when I leave work, my wife gets sent an automatic text message, and also gets sent another text when I am about 10 minutes from home (specifically when I reach a specific intersection on my commute home).

Phone goes into night mode at 8:30pm (reduced brightness, quieter ring volume) and then back to day mode at 6:30.

I have different phone profiles set up, so if I'm at the office, I have a "work" profile that has productivity widgets and apps prominent, as well more professional ringtones and wallpaper. When I'm not at the office, my phone is set up more for entertainment. These profiles automatically switch based on my location.

I have a lot more set up (probably 30 total), but you get the idea.

A lot of those sound very good. So tasker can use GPS location to initiate, that's cool. Android noob question here - can tasker tasks/profiles/scripts (what are they called?) be shared? I'd love to see and likely use some of the ones you mentioned, plus looking at them sounds like it would be a great way to learn how to use tasker well.

Tasker has a huge user base with sites dedicated to just tasker usages. http://tasker.wikidot.com/profile-index. Some profiles aren't dependant on any user specific parameters so you can download and import them. Others may be more complex so a tutorial walk-through is provided. Once you root and can give tasker SU permissions, it can automate CPU settings like set CPU or execute shell scripts as root. Me and a friend created a script which wipes cache when the screen shuts off.

Others include:
-When my BT headphones connect (or headphones jacked in) a pop up menu with apps that I need phones for comes up (radio, podcasts, mlb, panoramic, etc)
-audio mutes if disconnected while still playing
-at night phone goes silent, except for important numbers. If someone calls between 12am and 4am they get a text back that if it is an emergency to the text me EMERGENCY! which will turn my volume on, play an alarm, and let me know I missed an important call. Used that one when a friend went into labor and couldn't find a babysitter. So called, got text back, and texted me that back. I called right back.
-gps auto enables when I launch certain apps
-certain apps enable screen on, so it never turns off
-phone on face silences everything. Flip back to return to normal volumes.
-created a widget that acts as a gps car finder. Click once for locations, second click launches maps with the car location.
-aforementioned texting while in car also reads them aloud as the come in
-dims display when clock is on
-reminder from Sept to end of October and March-April that when I disconnect from car BT to turn on my heater (for warming up next morning)

This app can do pretty much anything you can think of.

Went in the app store looking for this amazing Tasker. Was surprised bot see the $7 price tag. Ouch. It looks worth the price I admit. Guess I'll just have to dish out 7 bucks huh? Lol

Not cheap at all, but I have found it to be worth it. If you think about it though, would you rather pay $7 for an app that automates actions, or $15 for 5 stickers that will do the same thing, but in a more limited capacity?

No worries about cases interfering, having to tap the stickers, and running out of them when you actually find some uses.

I have used Taskr and Locale, plus Setting Profiles. Taskr and Locale are more powerful by adding GPS capabilities. Which leads me to what I found as a problem with GPS initiated tasks/settings.

With a location based task/setting, (i.e. send a message to wife when leaving work, put my phone on vibrate when at the theatre, etc etc), Taskr and Locale need to check your location periodically and will more oft than not use your GPS to see if you are where or leaving the location that will activate your task/setting.

GPS based events/tasks drain your battery IMO. I like the use of a NFC tag in lieu of a GPS event/task. I think its the better of the two if it gets the same job done.

I'm going to be getting some of the tectiles, if for no other reason than to mute the thing when I place it in its holster/case, like my BlackBerry's have been able to do for years.

But - can't confirm this myself - but from EvilMonkey's notes, sure sounds like Profiles can incorporate and use GPS location also.

I dont use GPS profiles for that reason. Instead, I use widgets. Tasker lets you build widgets and I have a "theater" widget that I press when I walk in the door of any place that I need the phone silent. Its different than the normal ringer silence because of the outgoing text that lets them know if they text me EMERGENCY!, my phone will alert me that I need to check my notifications

Ok, so I picked up a 5 pack of the "official" tectiles today from an AT&T store. I didn't get much time to play with them, but here's the first interesting thing I found:

While trying to do the text-wife-random-message trick, it would pull up the phone number, but would hang on tryign to decide if it should use the standard Message app or if it should use AT&T message app. Seems like an issue to me. Thoughts?

Just thought of another profile I have on tasker ... And this is kind of a a-hole thing... But I also have it set to send out birthday texts that say "hey, just taking a minute to wish you a happy birthday... Hope you're having a good one". It goes out at 9am on their birthday. I usually get a "hey, thanks a lot, im surprised you remembered" text back... Then I have to think for a second and be like.... Remembered what? Then Im like, ohhhh.. I love you tasker.

Not sure how they work , but im hoping to set em up to donate 10bucks to my paypal account. I will then put them over every nfc thing i see at stores around town. Then i just wait for the lawsuits and money to roll in.

It really depends on the size of the tag. The bigger NFC tags from tagstand.com (credit card size) work through stuff. Example 1: One is inside the armrest storage on my van and I just put my phone on the armrest/tray and it reads. Example 2: Another is mounted under my nighstand (out of sight) and it is read as well. The smaller TecTile sized tags don't have much range and those require semi-direct contact for the most part. They work through thinner stuff like TPU cases...
