Recently I have been able to watch/listen YouTube in a reduced window while reading in a different app in the background.

I think its your phone settings. To use 2 apps at once. And you can resize it.

Click on your account bubble in upper right.
Click on settings.
Click on General.
Here you can enable/disable "Picture-in-picture" which creates the floating miniature player if you tap the home button while a video is playing.

You don't need youtube red. Anyone can do it.
First go to settings, advanced features, multi window and enable one or both methods.
Open youtube and use one of the methods to shrink it to a window.
The popup view method is easier to use and faster if you don't need split screen view.
But not all apps support pop up view and may crash when you try to use it on them.
For example I just tried to use it on tapatalk and it crashed

Thank you all for the replies. I don't have YouTube red, and yes, it's the picture in picture mode made it work.

For some reason I can't make the picture in picture function work anymore... the picture in picture function in setting - general is gone too.
