Zoes, Highlights, still pictures, and video. Here's how they all work and what they all mean

Agreed. Which is why my album has a mix of still shots and videos (no Zoe's) and the highlight films look great with a mix of video and stills.

Or far too short to capture a moment. Much easier to just record it as a video and crop/cut whatever you don't want. Better doing that than continuously taking 3 second Zoe's and potentially missing the moment.

Yep, luckily the camera has burst shot as well which can take more than 20 shots.

Oh and while video recording, you can still snap pics during it by pressing the camera button. So you can take videos longer than 3 seconds, along with snap photos.

I absolutely love the HTC One, but I still find Zoe's completely useless.

Completely useless to you perhaps. Some people see uses.

The video capture resolution is lower than the zoe stills. People complain about 4mp but the video capture is just about 2mp.

And snapping a still while taking a video is more difficult to time and keep camera steady so you don't get a bad still and a bounce in your video.

I posted a link to a 3 second zoe that captured the moment for me better than a still or including 27 extraneous seconds.

Additionally, with a zoe there is a whole different dynamic than video. They just aren't the same thing, but are a hybrid.

One thing that I find annoying is that when I take Zoes it actually auto uploads all 20 pics to my google+ account. Other than that I was surprised with the quality of the camera.

Yeah, I had to turn off auto upload. Had like 2000 zoe pics uploaded. Difficult to manage. now I just run all of them through light room and manage there.

That video you posted of the girl going down the slide could have just been done EXACTLY the same on video record lol. If you don't want an extra 27 seconds, then don't record an extra 27 seconds.....

The video looked cut off too. So you would have been better off starting the recording early and cutting it off a few seconds later. Still have the same effect of the Zoe, you would have captured the 'moment' and even more if you wanted. Maybe you have trouble pressing the camera button while video recording, but I sure don't.

There was nothing in that video that couldn't have been done with any other phone camera that can record video.

I really like the video highlight feature, but Zoe's are a complete gimmick. 3 second video...what's the point? I can do that with video record with recording 3 or more seconds and cut out anything I don't want. Too bad if you missed the moment, or the moment lasts longer than 3 seconds. Zoe can't help you there.

There's no 'dynamic' to a Zoe. It's a 3 second video along with 20 still shots. No one in their right mind would record a special moment on a video that's limited to 3 seconds. Especially when you can actually video record for 3 seconds and keep it going if you need.

Well, to be blunt, you may not have the imagination needed to see the potential, and you have made up your mind so, who cares what you think? You don't have to use it if you don't want to. Plenty of other people are loving it. Continuing to trash a nice feature will only further demonstrate your lack of imagination and creativity. Have at it.

You say that any other camera phone that can take video will do the same thing, but you are wrong because you won't get full resolution stills.

Also for highlights, yes, you can use a longer video and cut it down to what part you want, but using zoe you don't have to go through the edit process so it is more likely to actually be done. Your unedited 30 second video will be cut down by the phone for highlights if you don't edit it and it may not use the part you want.

So no one in their right mind would take a 3-second video combined with 20 stills to record a special moment? So taking a still is even worse to those in the right mind? Didn't catch that special moment with that 1/30 of second still? Must be crazy to even try to take still pictures.

The dynamic that is different is from the photographer. There is a different dynamic to how you shoot be it video or a still. If I am standing there taking videos, I am not using the same methods of timing composition as if I were taking a still. I choose different subjects, angles and composition depending on shooting videos or stills. Honestly, I find still photography much more rewarding than video for a lot of reasons. Now, Zoes are different from either videos or stills. It is a different tool that bridges the gap between videos and stills.

And saying that you can get a still from the video isn't the same thing as the zoe took the clip and also stills at FULL RESOLUTION. The stills pulled from a video shots won't take full resolution. And as I said, whether you wish to admit it or not, taking a still while recording introduces some element of vibration to the video and is much more difficult timing wise.

So to sum it up clearly zoes are not useless.

Did you not see my post about being able to fix smiles, remove background objects and create sequence shots with Zoes? Those three options do not show up under the Edit >> Retouch menu on still shots or movies. That is the point to Zoes.

Zoes can only be shared via HTC's site. You can look at them on your own phone, but you can;t share them to Facebook or Twitter. They are a series of stil .jpg files with metadata that plays them like an animation. We're looking at where to find the metadata so we can see about sharing zoe's with other folks who have an HTC One.
Zoes will only stay posted on HTC's site for 180 days. You can re-upload them again, though.
HTC's Zoe share site works perfectly on a computer, iOS device, and Android phones and tablets.

Actually, you can share them with other HTC Ones and have them show up as though they were taken on your phone. It will show up just like any other Zoe with a full range of editing such as object removal, always smile... ect.

Im not sure if its in the meta data of the photos themselves or not, but all I had to do was plug my phone in my computer, move all the stills and 3 second video to my hard drive. Then plug in my friends HTC One, copy those stills and video over to her phone and at first it will show up in the gallery as a bunch of stills and a video. Give it a few minutes, or close out gallery then reopen it, and the phone automatically merges it all into one Zoe.

Does anyone know how to get the old video highlights back (islanda, eifel etc) the new updated themes are not as good in my opinion
