ZVJ Experiences

Here's my experiences with ZVJ so far.

Currently using a zeroed out Optimus S (don't ask/legal for this phone) on ZVD radio using CM9 with Xionia Clockwork v1.2518.6 and CM9 default kernal.

Steps taken:

Downloaded the update from: [Update][UPDATE] ZVJ UPDATE.ZIP + rooting instructions
Be sure to uprate his thread, and those he referenced :) Likes/subscribes, the more the better don't be shy!

Placed update in /sdcard/ then I rebooted into recovery > wipe data/factory reset > wipe cache > mounts and storage > format system/data/cache/boot, used Debug-FormatSYSTEM.zip supplied by numerous Roms.

Installed the update with Xionia and verification turned off, rebooted, no service, but showed radio as MVJ/ZVJ. Rebooted into recovery, Did everything from above and flashed CM9, + homekey fix for a6 (key fix worked like a charm) and have service again. Radio shows as unknown though.

Is there a way for me to check that the radio was actually flashed and I didn't just flash the zvj default rom and back to cm9 lol.

Edit, even if this didn't upgrade the radio, it did somehow fix my home/search/camera key bug. Whereas no key fixes/rom affected it before. I believe that to be something worthy of note considering I went so far as to manually change everything related to the keys with exception to modifying kernals themselves :P

If you haven't flashed the update from a stock recovery, your radio never changed. That's a fact, xionia will NOT flash radios and trust me, that's a good thing, lol.

It is worth noting that there is no way to tell from the Android status page on this phone which radio you are actually running w/o also providing how you go to where you are at.

The reason is the "Baseband version" text in the ROM doesn't dynamically query the running modem for version info. It is actually just a static string embedded in the ROM. If you flash a ZVC-based ROM it will say ZVC. If you flash a ZVJ-based ROM it will say ZVJ. This is regardless of whether the modem changed in the process.

Also Xionia is designed to skip flashing modems because it will brick. This is an important safety measure as many people bricked this way in the old days.

So if you flash something using Xionia and never go through stock recovery, you will have whatever modem you started with though you may think you have the ZVJ modem based on the status page in Android.

The reason you want matched radio and ROMs is because (on this phone) often there are data issues with radios not matching ROMs. This can range from data not working at all (ZVD radio with ZVH ROM) or working fine (ZVC radio with ZVD ROM) It is just better practice to keep them matched on this phone.

Do you just run the update.zip two or three times to make sure the radio flashes properly?

I'm having this same issue where I can't get the radio to flash with the ZVJ update using the OP's link to another thread that outlines how to update but not how to make sure the radio is also being pushed

If you are flashing it in stock recovery, the radio will flash the first time around. No need to run it again.

The shortcut of flashing (ZVJ) update.zip twice (starting in Xionia recovery) won't flash the radio. That is something that only works with the ZVD update.zip

Looks like the blue tooth issue wasnt fixed in zvj.it still turns of when streaming music

So, the question of the day is... is ZVJ worth upgrading to? or is it fscked like zvh was?

I ended up downgrading back to zvd and am running reborn because I had issues with zvh... (inconsistencies more than anything else...)

Been being patient about zvj... know my wife's phone's still running zvh... and heaven help me before a screw with that phone... (is better to leave it alone where it "mostly works" than to bring down the wrath of god upon me unless I'm 100% certain it's worth it)...

Scott,
ZVJ is definitely worlds better than ZVH. They still didn't get 100% of the double tap issue fixed, but a simple flash of GingerKernel and its gone. I know how you almost lost you life the last time you messed with her phone (lol), but I know she will be happier with ZVJ. And in reality, since its essentially the same GB base, you shouldn't need to wipe her data at all to upgrade. Just a thought.

It is unfortunate that both GingerKernel and the iScream kernels are based off of the previous released LG sources and have the charging issue specific to ZVH. The stock kernel in ZVJ apparently his this fixed so it charges from third party chargers that don't have the data pins shorted.

i noticed that when the 3rd party usb chargers are old,it wont charge, my solution was to buy a new charger

Thanks for informing me about the custom recoveries not flashing radios!

Have been busy lately but will do a full ZVJ update today on the beater phone.
