Notification Bar

I doubt there is a way to do this, but I thought I might ask.

Is there anyway to turn off the notification bar or whatever it is called...thing you slide down from the top, like when you get a text message?

Reason I ask is this. Say you get a text. I have the messages widget on myhome screen so it puts a little 1 on it that I have a text. Seems redundant to also have a little mail icon on the top leading me to the same thing. Now I know I don't HAVE to slide it down to get to the text...but still, its bugging me.

Anyways, thought I'd ask.

Same with gMail but there is no status bar setting for HTC Mail
