is it possible to change the default screen capture filetype from ping to jpeg?

It should be possible. You will need a file converter to do it. The format is png and the file is in /sdcard/Pictures/Screenshots.

I know the format is in ping. I don't want to convert the file after taking it i want to save the file in jpeg to begin with.

If you look for a 3rd party application you may find one that allows you to set the default file type but I haven't seen anything like that for the built in screenshot capability.
