changes to how notifications are handled?

I used to open my podcast app or the BBC iPlayer app and play something, I would get the play, pause notification from the phones shade appear on the watch. Now I get nothing. Notifications are coming through - email, texts etc

Has the functionality I had been removed or could it be a setup issue. Anyone who could solve this will get nothing but praise from me
