Purchase in store without activation?

I've been looking for a new phone and finally settled on the turbo. However, I am currently on an unlimited line. I have a limited line in our family plan that currently has an upgrade. Would I be able to walk into a verizon store and have them upgrade that line, but keep the phone unactivated? That way I would be able to switch my sim in. Thanks!
