Why do I get "authentication problem" for wifi on my 2013 Nexus 7?

AC Question

I just bought a brand new Nexus 7 2013, and it connected at home just fine. The first thing I did was upgrade to the latest Lollipop version. So I downloaded all my old stuff from Google, and then downloaded other games I was eager to try out. But when I got to work and tried to connect, I get this "authentication problem" that everyone is complaining about, and I get it at my in-laws house as well. It seems I can only connect to about half of the various locations that have public wifi available. Why is this? My wife's Nexus 10 is fully upgraded and it connects everywhere just fine.

I have read various theories on how to fix this, but I still have no luck. Please advise what I should do, because at this point I am considering taking it back and getting something else (even though I love everything else about it). I thought the first upgrade to Lollipop was supposed to fix this for the Google tablets, but it clearly hasn't fixed mine. Thanks.
