Why won't my phone stay on or charge consistently?

I have been having a hard time with my Samsung Galaxy S3 for a few weeks or so. I have tried a couple of different batteries I haven't used but it's still having the same problem. I charged it until about 30% and then turned it on (because I have been having a hard time using it when it's not plugged), and went to settings to get it switched to factory mode and it just shut off. I've tried again a couple of more times but it won't stay on. Last time it showed the powering up window twice and then shut down. Now it doesn't even show any indication that it's charging. Is this a battery issue or a phone issue?
