Why does the Messenger app lag and freeze so much?

I've had my LG Enact for about two years now and the Messaging app is starting to slow down and freeze. When I'm in the app, and I receive a message, send a message, or start typing a message, it freezes and lags heavily. Sometimes it downright crashes. When I'm not in the app, I can receive perfectly fine. When I go back into the app to see the message, the app lags. No other app I use slows down like this. And it's not the phone itself freezing and lagging, because I can pull down the notifications menu from the top just fine.

Have you tried Settings, Apps, swipe to All, scroll to your messaging app, and select Clear Cache?
