Welcome to Android Central! Did you successfully log into the phone with your Google account when you first set up the phone? Can you access other Google apps like Gmail or Google Calendar without issue?

Go to the App Manager, select Google Play Store, and Clear Cache/Clear Data, then Force Stop. Now try again.
