My speaker and microphone are not working

I have a problem that it appears that the speaker and microphone are not working. I make a call and it connects to who i am calling however, I cannot hear them and they cannot hear me. If I call the phone, it shows a call coming in on the screen but I cannot answer. I also noticed that if I try to play the music on the phone I get a message "unable to play music" . Prior to this I was having a problem with having the phone ring even with the setting in the Normal selection. I tried rebooting and also I did a factory re-boot without success. I had the local Verizon store look at it and they tried without success. The phone is about a year and a half old. It does get heavy use and I will have to get a new phone if I can't fix this one. Help! Any ideas? This is an android HTC One cell phone.
