Can you tell me why my Verizon 4 LG won't let me swipe to unlock or shut it down?

It's never done this before. Just wondering why. It's charged, will let me go to the camera; but won't let me take any pictures. It says "No Service" and just goes to the first screen, nothing else. It won't let me shut it down, either. Can you help me?

If possible on whatever model you have, try removing the battery, pressing Power for ten seconds, then replacing the battery.
