Can I get Messaging app to notify me of new msg even when I'm in the msg thread?

I'm getting notifications from the Messaging app when a new msg comes in, but not if the thread/conversation containing the new msg is displayed. This means if I respond to a text and put the phone down, leaving that conversation displayed, and the other person texts me, I don't know they've texted me until the next time I look at the phone.

I want it to notify me with a sound even when the conversation is already open on the screen. Is there a way to do that?

My Samsung does the same. I never found a solution. It's annoying having to exit the app to receive notifications or having to keep glancing at the phone
