How do I keep my apps from running in the background?

I have a Samsung Galaxy Core, about 3 years old, and lately my battery is draining fast. I notice there are always apps running in the background every time I run the Battery Saver app, how do i keep this from happening? Also, is this a normal battery issue for a 3 year old phone?

All user apps will run in the foreground when being used, until you exit the app.

Some apps will run in the background because they have things to do while waiting for you to switch back to the app. Exit the app to stop this.

Some apps have services they communicate with. These services are "apps" that run only in the background. If they have nothing to do, they do nothing until needed.

Which apps and/or services are you referring to?
