why doesn't my laptop recognise phone content when i connect usb?

when i connect my moto g4 to laptop by usb it starts charging mode. if I switch from that to 'file transfers' (MTP) the phone doesn't get recognised by the laptop. If i switch to 'photo transfer' the laptop recognised the phone but only shows photos on internal storage and phone card folders

Which phone?
Which version of android?
Which carrier?

Mac or Windows? Which version?

You may need to go to the phone maker's website and download some computer drivers to fully see the phone as an external hard drive.
