Why do I keep getting a message pop up saying unfortunately, google play services has stopped?

Why do i keep getting a message pop up saying "unfortunately, google play services has stopped"

I keep getting a pop up saying that unfortunately google play services has stopped working and not even a minute after i press ok it continues to pop up. I have tried everything. Also, it takes forever for me to send a text and i don't even get half the texts back that i'm suppose to afterwards when it actually sends.

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? What do you mean when you say you've tried everything? It helps for us to know, so that we don't suggest things you've already tried.

My first suggestion would be to reboot the device. If that doesn't work, try booting into Safe Mode, to see if the problem is due to a 3rd party app.
