I use a simple Zooper Widget with the battery percentage on my home screen. It's small, out of the way and super customizable. It's a great app for customizing since it gives you total control of size, text, placement, color etc.

Trying to do something similar but don't want a widget on my home screen or anything added to the pull down menus. I noticed a pic from one of the apps above had a percent number with a ring around it in place of the stock battery status icon:

I like the looks of this. I don't know if this is just the stock battery status icon from a different phone/mfg or if this is just an app or theme but can this same thing be done on a Nexus 5?

I am not 100% sure but I believe you need root access to do that. Otherwise, you just have to put up with the battery icon on the right and the percentage on the left.

How van I permanently know battery's percentage?
If you are rooted an option would be to install Xposed Framework and you can then install a module called GravityBox which gives you some choices on how you can display battery percentage. That's just one of many things that GravityBox can change for you. My dock looks a little different because I'm using Nova Launcher Prime.

Just put up a new Battery Widget. Go to home, tap and empty space, click on widgets and add a widget on the home screen. It will tell you not enough room to put the widget, but the bug will install a Battery percentage on top now. Hope this helps.

Try this, but not sure its available on older androids.
1)Go to settings
2)Open "WallPaper and Display"...Scroll down and you should see "Display Left percents"
Click this and you should see the remaining battery percentage sign on the left side of the battery.
This is how I set it on my android, but versions are different, so not sure it will work on yours.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
