What is this thing on the back cover?

I would like to know what the darker part is in the middle, it seems like a sticker of some sort. I don't wanna take it off in fear that it will break the phone in some way.

Not sure. Does it look like a sticker, or just a denser part of the back cover (since you're looking at it with a strong backlight)?

It's stuck on. It pertrudes off the surface like a sticker would. I picked at a corner a little bit and it's a sticker of some sort. It might just be extra padding for the battery and internals. Not sure though. It feels thicker than a regular sticker.

Is it like foam or rubber? Maybe it acts as a sort of heat sink for the battery.

It feels more like rubber. And maybe. That area of the back tends to heat up more than the rest when the phone is going through extensive use, YouTube, streaming video, etc.
