My data connection works fine for the most part without any drops and there's 4G in my area (Ithaca,NY) but I don't think it's LTE (not sure if there's two different kinds). However, when the data connection does fluctuate it goes from 4G to EDGE skipping 3G when my old phone picked 3G up fine. Is it a carrier issue? Any ideas on how to remedy the issue?

When you are on LTE, you'll see "LTE" next to the "4G".

Regular 4G runs on the same network as 3G, but is just tweaked to be faster. There would never be an instance where you would have access to 3G, but not 4G.
