How can I get my IMAP email account to sync to my HTC?

I can send messages on this account, but it doesn't display my inbox. When I try to refresh, I sometimes get "network error" or "server timed out." In the settings menu, it says " sync is currently experiencing problems. It will be back shortly." Shortly has been all day!
