I'm going to pick up an Echo. (Currently have a Photon.)

Always wanted one, but I'm going to sell the Photon/Lapdock combo and just wait out the ICS/Jelly Bean mess for a while.

My contract will be up in another year and I'm very happy on GB on the Photon. I don't have WiMax in my area, so I've never seen 4G speeds...I just use 3G & Wifi.

I know the battery life isn't spectacular, but I'm a light user.

So...do most Apps run ok on it? Is it particularly buggy?

It has not given me to much trouble. There's been issues with OTA's bricking some phones. There is root and a custom recovery available if you like having those options. I don't think it will get any update to ICS or JB but maybe, more likely if someone makes a ROM.
