Android phone screen not working, turns on but it's only a black screen?

i thought it was a phone issue at first, it happened on my Sony Xperia (can't remember the model) a few months ago, i've been using a really old HTC Sensation as a replacement since then and last night literally the same thing happened, so i'm convinced it's an OS issue?

They were both fully charged or nearly full, the Xperia i had dropped which is why i thought it was a hardware issue, but this HTC has received nothing but love and care and poof, screen goes?!
