Notification bar keeps updating with same info

The notification bar on my Atrix updates twice per day with the same information. It notifies me that I have new text messages but when I drop it down, it's the same information that was there hours earlier. I check the sms app to verify this. Does anyone know how I can turn this off? Where do the setting live so I can stop this from happening?

Are you using a non-stock messaging app or do you have one installed?

Yes, I'm using Handcent. The email alerts are fine. It's the sms alerts. It pops up several times per day with the same alerts from earlier in the day. I guess it's the app?
