How to sync contacts from my Microsoft exchange account

When I add a contact through my Samsung Galaxy phone and it does not appear in my contact list on my exchange account. My sync os set to 'on' for the contacts on tha account. I also tried to sync manually. When I add a contact or change a contact through my computer it appears on my phone instantly without having to do anything. I have the same problem with the calendar.

when you add the contact there should be a drop-down of some kind to choose what kind of contact is this. Either Exchange, locally or other accounts like gmail etc.

It worked. But I could not find a way to change the contacts I added. Also is there a way I could change the default so that new contacts do not get added to the google account by default.
